T T Karen Phelps Lower Hutt based Packaging Products Ltd’s (PPL) new CustomBox division has recently invested in cutting edge technology to offer a unique solution for businesses requiring small to medium runs of custom-made corrugated boxes. “We saw a gap in the market for SMEs who needed custom boxes but couldn’t meet the high minimum order quantities set by larger manufacturers,” says Cameron Tooley, Managing Director of PPL. “Our new BOXmaker Ultra machine allows us to produce boxes of any shape and size, from just one unit up to larger quantities, with no setup costs, allowing businesses to present their products professionally without the burden of large upfront costs or excess inventory.” The BOXmaker Ultra, acquired earlier this year, is a sophisticated piece of equipment imported from Europe. It can create boxes up to two cubic metres in size, offering unparalleled flexibility for businesses with diverse packaging needs, says Cameron. “This machine has helped us develop the market substantially and compete against larger players who don’t supply small to medium runs.” CustomBox’s typical turnaround time is 5-7 days, with free samples available if required. “We supply the exact quantity ordered,” explains Cameron. “There’s no waiting and no waste, making it a cost-effective and simple solution for our clients.” CustomBox operates as a division of PPL, alongside Labels Plus and the core packaging distribution business. This structure allows the company to offer a comprehensive suite of services to its clients, from custom boxes and labels to a wide range of packaging supplies. The company’s history dates back to 1975 when Cameron’s father, Dale Tooley, founded the business as a wholesale distributor of packaging products in the Wellington region. Over the years, PPL has continuously adapted to changing market conditions and customer needs. “During the 2000s, as manufacturing started to decline in New Zealand, we diversified and evolved our product range. We began investing in niche manufacturing equipment to fill gaps in the market, particularly for small production runs.” Today about 20% of PPL’s business involves manufacturing these niche solutions with the remainder focused on distribution and custom large run solutions. The company stocks over 3,000 products including being one of the largest suppliers of magnetic boxes in New Zealand. It has also invested in advanced printing capabilities, offering full-colour digital and screen printing services with no setup costs. The company’s commitment to innovation has also seen it offer diverse services such as laser engraving, signage creation and name badge production. While historically the business had focused on the Wellington region the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly accelerated the company’s growth. “We established many new clients throughout the country during lockdowns,” Cameron says. “Businesses that couldn’t open their doors suddenly needed to set up home offices and ship goods to clients. They needed packaging to do so and we were there to help.” This trend has continued post-pandemic, with PPL now serving customers nationwide. The company’s modern e-commerce website has played a crucial role in supporting this expansion. As a member of Paklink, a buying group consisting of seven independent packaging companies throughout New Zealand, Cameron says that PPL benefits from collective buying power that allows it to remain competitive in the market. “We’re proud to be locally owned and operated, with the flexibility to innovate and adapt our services in response to our customers’ needs.”
