T T Kelly Deeks Customer-centric transport and logistics company McCarthy Transport has provided innovative distribution solutions for New Zealand’s forestry industry since 1949, when company founder Arthur McCarthy laid a solid foundation with his single truck and a commitment to excellence which has remained a cornerstone of the company’s values as it has grown together with its customers for 75 years. Driven by a relentless pursuit of customer satisfaction and operational excellence, McCarthy Transport has expanded greatly, taking up every viable opportunity the New Zealand forestry industry has presented along the way. A key part of the McCarthy history was the start of the Winstone Karioi pulp mill in 1978, to which the company’s current owner Mark McCarthy delivered the first load. The mill required more and more lumber as it grew and to keep up with this demand, McCarthy Transport’s fleet grew too. By 1988 the company was running eight trucks and in four years, demand from Winstone saw the fleet grow to about 33 trucks, most of which were double shifted from Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning, and McCarthy Transport moved from the family home to a new head office, workshop, and yard at Karioi. The fleet then expanded throughout the Ruapehu area and also into Whanganui/ Manawaty, Taranaki, Napier, and Tokoroa with the acquisition of three smaller log transport companies. In 1998, a big sawmill from the USA was set up in Whanganui giving McCarthy Transport the opportunity to have machinery operating in this mill, loading log decks, moving woodchip, and moving timber from Whanganui to Auckland, then working them back down the island to bring logs back to the mill. Then in 2004, the export log market took a dive. The Whanganui sawmill shut down causing a massive restructure of McCarthy Transport. The business went from double shifted units back to single shift, and some of the specialised equipment was sold off. Four years later, McCarthy Transport was back on its growth curve with an opportunity to operate in the Wairarapa with the purchase of an existing log cartage company and a contract to cart for Juken New Zealand to the JNL mill and to the Port in Wellington. A new workshop and yard was later built in Masterton to house more than 50 trucks. The Central Hawke’s Bay fleet was also rebuilt to service an existing major client, along with a log transfer yard which helped to alleviate delays from the Port of Napier. Now owned and operated by the second and third generations, Mark and Mike McCarthy, McCarthy Transport has an asset portfolio of 150 trucks, 16 loader machines, three mechanical workshops and one engineering workshop where the company’s own logging gear and trailers and maintained, services, and built, as well as other projects for diversification related to log handling and cartage. Today McCarthy Transport remains committed to supporting new and current customers by delivering a cost-effective, high quality service and providing a challenging and rewarding work environment for its people.
