T T Bernadette Cooney New Zealand transport operators are not immune to current economic challenges, with a drop in volumes of product shifted, putting pressure on transport companies and the sector’s service industries, says the owner-director of Weatherell Transport Gisborne, Steve Weatherell. Providing reliable nationwide logistics for growers, food processors and distributors across the central North Island for 30 years - Weatherell Transport are specialists in chilled and frozen goods transportation. “Like many other businesses we’re feeling the effects of a depressed market, with a drop in the volumes we cart for sure,” says Steve, “as the impact of economic downturn changes consumer behaviours and rising costs impact operators.” “Everybody’s returns have dropped so there is less volume to shift therefore it’s a pretty tough time for transport and associated service providers” says Steve. The slowdown has led to belt tightening and downsizing for the company says Steve, but they continue to sustain employment for 150 people nationwide. This includes contract drivers such as Auckland owner driver, Onkar of PB07 Transport, renowned for his capacity and problem-solving skills. “He’s brilliant at making life easier for our dispatchers and getting stuff done,” says Steve. Despite the impact of cyclones and current downturn the district remains active and optimistic. “There is still plenty of activity and as we head into Spring there are plenty of fields being planted out, so we remain committed to ensuring out clients’ product gets to market efficiently, safely and in a timely manner.” Operating out of depots in Auckland, Gisborne, Tauranga, Napier, Palmerston North and Christchurch Weatherell Transport runs 115 trucks, that travel ten million kilometres per year.
