The company invested in a large new freight shed for their Gisborne branch following a fire in 2016 and last year they built a new workshop at the opposite end of the same site. “Plus, our Auckland depot is about to make a move from Freight Place site in Mangere, back to Otahuhu.” In addition to transport solutions for temperature sensitive goods, Weatherell Transport operate a container freight service, handling a significant portion of fruit and meat export shipments across the region. “Our container fleet take care of the likes of Ovation Meats,” says Steve, “we cart all their containers from their North Island plants plus we do a lot of export apples out of the Gisborne region.” Weatherell Transport also provide transport services to LeaderBrand fresh produce and Foodstuffs amongst others. Founded in 1994 by Steve and Jane Weatherell, the company has grown from a two-man, one truck enterprise servicing local produce growers, into a significant transport provider running a daily return service between all major North Island centres, a 24-hour service Christchurch and a 36-hour service to other major South Island destinations. ““I moved here in 1994 and established Weatherell Transport,” Steve recalls. “ I was an owner-driver for a big national company for six years, based out of Tauranga and carting produce to Gisborne every day. I had a driver that used to take the truck from Tauranga to Auckland and back again.” Safety has always been a top priority for Weatherell Transport.
