| 55 Contact Energy - Tauhara Geothermal Station INFRASTRUCTURE Cultural considerations were woven into the project’s fabric. Wells has completed a crucial role on Contact Energy's Tauhara Geothermal Generation Project in Taupo, showcasing its capability to deliver complex infrastructure projects at scale. Wells, which has been operating for over 40 years, recently finished the electrical installation work on the 174MW facility capable of powering up to 200,000 homes. "The project demonstrates Wells' ability to scale and our commitment to deliver," says Justin Peterson, Chief Executive Officer of Wells. "At the project's peak, we had 135 people working on site." The scope of the work, which began in September 2022, saw Wells working as the electrical contractor for Fuji Sumitomo for the main generator and associated facilities. The Wells team installed more than 41,000 metres of low, medium, and high voltage cables, nearly 132,000 metres of control cables and over 4,000 metres of cable tray along with the large number electrical and instrumentation equipment that was connected on site. Safety remained paramount throughout the Tauhara project. The company's commitment to safety is reflected in its impressive list of certifications, including ISO 45001:2018 for occupational health and safety management and ISO 9001:2015 & ISO 14001:2015 for Quality & Environmental management. "Wells completed over 200 Site Safety observations during the life of the project and partnered with contractors, Sumitomo and Contact Energy to develop solutions to complex safety challenges," explains Justin. The Tauhara project also demonstrated Wells commitment to community engagement, with the company partnering with Contact Energy to support local iwi with employment throughout the project's duration. The successful completion of the project underscores Wells evolution from its humble beginnings as Wells Instrument & Electrical in the early 1980s to today's nationwide operation employing over 400 staff. The company offers a comprehensive suite of services including electrical and instrumentation work, metering and field services, automation, design, IOT and workflow management solutions. Wells Group's expertise spans multiple sectors, from food and beverage projects to heavy industrial infrastructure and power generation. The company manages over 8,000 field service jobs daily across New Zealand, offering services from electricity metering to electric vehicle charging solutions. With the successful completion of the Tauhara project, Justin says that Wells continues to strengthen its position as a key player in New Zealand's electrical sector. "Our values, focus on people, safety and leveraging our expertise, and specialist knowledge to create customised solutions that meet our clients' needs.” As New Zealand continues to develop its renewable energy infrastructure, Wells experience with projects like Tauhara positions it well for future growth in the sector, while its comprehensive service offering ensures it remains a vital partner across the electrical industry landscape.
