T T Karen Phelps “As industries evolve and face new challenges, we’ll be right there, ready to innovate and provide the solutions they need. We believe there is always a solution to a problem, you just need to know where to look for it.” Hawkes Bay company Innovate Engineering Solutions is living up to its name by bringing fresh, innovative thinking to industrial engineering. Based on Omahu Road in Hastings the company has a sound reputation for its creative approach to solving complex engineering challenges. Founded by Quentin Groenewald, who has over 16 years of experience in the mining and aggregate sectors, Innovate Engineering has established itself, as a go-to solution provider for industrial maintenance needs. The company specialises in maintaining quarry, fertiliser, and cement plants, as well as handling light to medium-sized engineering projects. “Our name stands exactly for what and who we are,” says Quentin’s wife Ronica, who manages the company’s accounts and administration. “We’re not just maintaining equipment; we’re constantly looking for ways to improve processes and increase efficiency.” This innovative thinking has led to significant cost savings for the company’s clients. “For example the team at Innovate installed five new vibrating screens for Holcim Aggregates, as the old screens kept on breaking down,” explains Quentin. “There was a slight error with the angle design of the screens when we received it from England. We had to use our Innovative thinking to change the screens to fit and still function as intended.” In another project Innovate took the jaw crusher out of a client’s scrap yard and fully reconditioned it for the fraction of the price of a new one. It also fully assembled the mobile cement plants for Harapaki Wind Farm for Allied (which is now Holcim Cement), maintained it throughout the assembly time of the wind turbines due to the high volumes of cement that was used and fully dismantled the mobile cement plants after all the wind turbines were erected. The company’s approach to problem solving is refreshingly straightforward. “When you first start trying to solve a problem, the initial solutions you come up with are often very complex,” Quentin explains. “But if you keep going, and live with the problem and peel more layers of the onion off, you can often arrive at some very elegant and simple solutions. That’s what we strive for at Innovate Engineering.” This philosophy extends beyond their client work. Innovate Engineering is also committed to nurturing the next generation of engineers. “We stand strong to help New Zealand train up apprentices to see them fulfil their dreams and to reach their full potential as qualified tradespeople,” says Quentin. “If people are interested in joining our team, we encourage them to contact us.” The company’s services cover a wide range of industrial needs, including engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, repair work, and modifications. The team of experienced and qualified engineers is capable of handling everything from daily maintenance to major shutdowns and equipment overhauls. Quentin says that what sets Innovate Engineering apart is its specialisation in offering a comprehensive service spanning engineering, field service team and a workshop. “We understand that not all engineering problems can be solved in a workshop,” says Quentin. “Our team is ready to go on-site, diagnose issues, and implement solutions right where they’re needed.” The leadership team at Innovate Engineering brings a wealth of experience to the table. While Quentin’s background in mining and his qualifications as a Boilermaker/Fitter-Welder provide the technical expertise, Ronica’s administration experience ensures the business side runs smoothly. “It’s a true partnership,” Ronica says. “Quentin handles the engineering side, while I manage the accounts and administration. Together, we cover all aspects of the business.” Other key team members include qualified fitter and field service team leader Stanley Snell and qualified boiler maker and fitter welder Hardie Bruwer. Looking to the future, Innovate Engineering is poised for growth. The couple’s commitment to sustainable progress and cost-effective productivity improvements positions them well in an industry that’s constantly seeking efficiencies.
