T T Karen Phelps OPS Plumbing & Pipeline’s success as a finalist in the CCNZ Connexis Civil Training and Development Awards 2024 reflects its commitment to developing a skilled workforce and contributing to the infrastructure sector, says company director Racheal Cottam. Based in New Plymouth, OPS is primarily a civil contractor, delivering work across a wide range of civil construction projects, from drainage to large-scale infrastructure development. Racheal, who drives OPS’s training and development focus, has been instrumental in shaping the company’s programs. She ensures that employees receive the support and education needed to succeed. With 18 apprentices among its 73-strong workforce, OPS is committed to investing in the future of civil construction in the Taranaki region. “We are committed to building long-term careers and ensuring our people have the skills they need to succeed,” says Racheal. “This approach has led to great staff retention, with some team members staying with us for over eight years. Our focus on training ensures OPS continues to grow in both capacity and expertise.” This dedication to workforce development is complemented by the leadership of founder Jeremy Cottam and COO Safwan Beg. Jeremy’s hands-on approach and technical expertise have been key to OPS’s growth, while Safwan’s leadership has helped scale operations effectively. “Together, Jeremy and Safwan have ensured OPS remains a leader in civil contracting,” says Racheal. “They’ve shaped OPS into a company that delivers quality services while investing in the future of the industry.” OPS recently expanded into South Taranaki by opening a new depot in April 2024, reinforcing its presence and meeting the growing demand for civil contracting services. Additionally, the company has fostered relationships within the local community by sponsoring sports teams and participating in regional events. “These initiatives have strengthened our ties in South Taranaki and reinforced our longterm commitment to the region,” explains Racheal. “We aim to be a trusted partner not only in civil infrastructure but also in supporting the community.” Because OPS also owns Avenue Roading, a sister company specialising in road construction and maintenance this allows OPS to provide comprehensive services, managing projects from infrastructure installation to fullscale roadworks. The addition of directional drilling capabilities enhances OPS’s offerings, positioning it as a one-stop shop for civil construction, says Racheal. OPS’s clients include key regional councils such as New Plymouth, South Taranaki, and Stratford District Councils. By managing complex civil projects inhouse, OPS has earned a reputation for reliability and excellence. OPS also services the energy sector in Taranaki, both onshore and offshore, further diversifying its capabilities. Looking ahead, OPS is planning further growth, including expansion into the Whanganui market. “OPS’s success is built on strong leadership, a dedicated team, and a commitment to training and community engagement,” says Racheal. “As we grow, our focus on delivering high-quality civil construction will remain central to our mission.”
