| 89 Central Demolition CONTRACTING ‘Waste not’ vision drives C&D recycling Central Demolition has opened new branches in Tauranga, Wellington, Hamilton and Taranaki. T T Kim Newth Having spent more than 20 years building one of New Zealand’s foremost demolition companies, Ian Butcher is now adding another trailblazing chapter with an innovative new construction and demolition (C&D) recycling hub that is poised to significantly slash waste going to landfill in the lower North Island in coming months. Ian founded Manawatu’s Central Demolition with only a digger and a truck. Over the past two decades, the company has grown to become a true leader in commercial and residential demolition. The highly skilled team share a commitment to excellence and today have a whole fleet of vehicles at their disposal. Central Demolition provides a total solution, including specialist asbestos removal services across a range of commercial sectors. In recent years, Central Demolition has opened new branches in Tauranga, Wellington, Hamilton and Taranaki. Right now, though, Ian’s focus is on Central Demolition’s sister company Central Environmental that has recently built a new 800sqm recycling hub in rural Fielding. A $1.6m funding boost equipment from the Ministry for the Environment, used to pay for advanced processing and sorting machinery, has fast-tracked this exciting facility. Central Environmental is now rapidly stepping up its operations to recycle C&D waste at scale. “We’re already reaching out to construction companies to bring their construction waste to us and are processing large amounts of treated timber, plaster board, plastics, cardboard, glass and concrete. Currently, we’re diverting from landfill more than 90% of all construction waste that comes to our site. Last year, we diverted around 80,000 tonnes of C&D waste but we expect that to double in 2025. “We’ve also developed an adjacent composting site. That can take all the green waste that comes in as well as plaster board offcuts as the gypsum can be used in composting; it’s a good soil conditioner.” A recent project to deconstruct the TomoanaGrandstand in the Hastings District demonstrates the circular power of the combined Central Demolition and Central Environmental operation. “We achieved 97% diversion from landfill on that project, including all the concrete, glass and steel.” Central Environmental’s recycling site includes a concrete crushing and processing area where concrete waste is transformed into high quality aggregate, currently in high demand for roading projects. “We can’t get enough waste concrete at the moment to produce the aggregate we need to keep up with demand. It sells so fast. We don’t charge for the concrete that comes in. People can dump it for free and we then process and sell it.” The new recycling hub enables large loads to be brought to site for initial sorting and salvage. Remaining material is then put through a rotating screen and sent to a picking station for further sorting into various recycling streams. Waste timber is shredded and processed, before being transported to Whangarei as fuel for an industrial furnace. “Until recently, we’ve had a team of four on the ground for Central Environmental. We’re just getting the new sorting streams organised now and that will bring quite a lot of growth. We expect to grow the Central Environmental team to 15 full-time staff over the next year.” Proud to be Associated with Central Demolition Precision & Efficiency Your Go-To Concrete Cutting & Removal Service Our commitment to precision has seen us emerge as a market leader.
