T T Anne Boswell In the fast-paced world of project management, clear and concise communication is crucial - just like a “sitrep,” or situation report, used in emergency services to provide a precise snapshot of unfolding events. Inspired by this concept, Hastings-based Sitrep Projects takes the same approach to managing complex projects, delivering sharp, timely, and effective solutions across a range of industries. Founded in 2019, Sitrep Projects is a specialist provider of professional project, contract, and site management services. Under the leadership of Managing Director James Douglas, the business has quickly established itself across various industries including process engineering, manufacturing, construction, and civil engineering. Sitrep makes use of its deep industry experience to offer a hands-on and tailored approach for each client. James’ career has been marked by continuous growth and learning. Starting as a fabric engineer at just 17, he worked his way up in the engineering and construction fields. His experience spans multiple countries, including working on oil rigs and as a welder in Australia. After returning to New Zealand, James transitioned from the trades to the professional side of project management, gaining valuable experience for over 12 years before deciding to start Sitrep Projects. James holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Management, majoring in Project Management, and is also trade qualified, giving him a unique perspective that blends practical skills with theoretical knowledge. This experience is what allows him to bridge the gap between trade workers and management professionals, ensuring that Sitrep Projects is able to offer solutions that are both feasible on the ground, and professionally sound. James has observed two key trends within the industries Sitrep serves. First, that many practical, hands-on business owners excel in their craft but they don’t put enough time into the professional management skills that underpin their ability to scale their operations. He has witnessed some businesses struggling with the office/operational side of their business, particularly when working with larger organisations. A professional approach to these processes can help businesses position themselves better and ensure continued success. “Good, clear reporting and communication can help you sell your next job,” James says. The second observation is that often companies fall short during the tendering process. A simple Gantt chart showing project steps and timeframes is value added. “It goes a long way when you can demonstrate to a client that you understand the work required, and you also need to ensure that the client understands clearly what you are offering to provide,” he says. “Managing expectations and good communication is paramount; getting that right at the start ensures everything flows.” As Sitrep Projects continues to grow, James plans to keep an open mind about the types of projects he takes on, prioritising the opportunity to engage in the field rather than just working from behind a desk. This hands-on approach aligns with Sitrep’s core philosophy of providing practical, efficient and client-focused project management services.
