90 | CONTRACTING MaxTarr Offering large-scale electrical services Most of the projects MaxTarr has undertaken this year have been of a smaller scale than usual. T T Sue Russell In another three years, Palmerston North based company MaxTarr will celebrate 50 years in business. During the course of those decades the company has seized opportunities and evolved into a large-scale electrical services, engineering, and civil works entity to name a few of its key divisions. “Max Tarr started working from home as an electrician, developing specialist electrical knowledge in the industrial sector over time. Today we’re a major multidiscipline business working across the commercial, industrial, community and civil works spaces,” says Infrastructure Manager, Reece Lloyd. This growth has happened because of significant investment in company resources, structure and people. Attracting skilled people into the team and investing in advanced equipment while ensuring staff work spaces are modern and fit-for-purpose, have been priorities underpinning MaxTarr’s growth. Offering Design Build services and engaging in all stakeholders through a project, no matter its size or situation, are strengths of the business today. This means a wide array of projects cross the company’s desk, creating a vibrant and challenging work environment for staff to enjoy. “It has been somewhat quieter of late, as economic factors impacting the kinds of projects we get involved in, begin to shift to a more positive space. A considerable amount of our work is based around developing and servicing 3 waters infrastructure and this is determined by Council spending in their budget cycles.” Reece has been with MaxTarr four years now, having come from a Council planning background. He says carrying those experiences is a good thing, supporting opportunities for Council work to be pursued. “The big part is the people and the leadership which gives people freedom and the trust to get on and develop and deliver quality outcomes. Trust in people is huge in this company and everyone feels part of the culture and journey.” “I was interested also in the career opportunities working for a go-ahead company like MaxTarr has to offer. Working for Council is a much longer career path and I’m thoroughly enjoying the culture and vibe of this business.” Max Tarr is now in his 70’s but still puts in a full week, every week, however, is now starting the process of handing over the reins to his daughter who has just returned from the U.S. and taken up the role of Group General Manager across all the company’s divisions. Most projects are within the greater Manawatu area, however Reece says, depending on the nature and scope of work, they will vie for projects further afield. 213 Stoney Creek Rd, Palmerston North 06-356-5557 www.blackley.co.nz For all your Farm & Civil Construction Needs Proudly working with Max Tarr on many projects, successfully designing and manufacturing the right solution for the site specification.
