T T Kelly Deeks Waihi Beach’s A Knight Design and Build has been celebrated twice for its excellent craftsmanship at this year’s Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards, with both a new build and a renovation project receiving top honours with gold awards, category wins, and Top 100 national placings. Company founder and director Adam Knight says this year’s House of the Year wins are particularly special since A Knight Design and Build last had a Top 100 in 2021 so due to Covid, didn’t have a national event to attend. Not so this year, and Adam and the team look forward to heading to Auckland for the National Awards Gala in November. Their projects up for national recognition are a sophisticated new build at Waihi Beach in the style of a charming Wellington character villa, and an old milking shed on a farm at Waiau River which A Knight Design and Build has transformed into a modern rural retreat and harmonious extension to the existing elegant farmhouse. Up at Waihi Beach, a couple looking to retire from Wellington found the perfect seaside section with unobstructed and panoramic bay views out to Mayor Island Tuhua. Connecting his clients with Bruce Parker from the local Parker Architectural Design, Adam worked alongside client and designer to fulfil the brief which was required to capture the character of a traditional Wellington villa and give it a beach-house vibe. Adam’s input allowed for some special features to be incorporated both during design and during construction. The home is built on a sloping site across three levels, and during construction, Adam could see it coming out slightly one-sided to the left hand side. Not a problem for this experienced builder, who has added some beautiful floating stone steps to the right, perfectly balancing the form and leading past a split level garden bed to the warm and welcoming mid-level deck. The character continues inside this home where pitched and raftered ceilings, grooved panelling, and a hand-lain stone chimney create a warm and rustic ambience. Open plan living caters to modern family life, and open out to multiple outdoor living areas where privacy, outlook, and shelter can all be enjoyed at different times of the day. At Waiau River, an old milking shed with absolutely everything out of plumb by hundreds of millimetres was transformed by A Knight Design and Build for a return client. The team had some really interesting work to do with exposed oak rafters, polished concrete floors, grooved panelling, and barn door sliders on the inside complementing the authentic agricultural vibe of the board and batten exterior. Original materials were recycled and reused where possible, and beautiful old Huntly Bricks have been repurposed for the floor of a practical but very pretty porchoutside the front door, and for all the garden paths surrounding the property.
