Headquartered in New Plymouth, Wells Instrument & Electrical has built an outstanding reputation for delivering best-practice services across New Zealand’s energy sectors. Proudly family-owned and founded in 1984 by Graham Wells, the company has grown into a national operation with two key divisions –Instrumentation, Electrical and Automation along with revenue Metering services. The company operates across many locations throughout New Zealand to support customers at a national level. What began as a specialist provider of industrial electrical, instrumentation and automation services, has evolved into a multi-disciplined, solutionsfocused enterprise, servicing major industries nationwide – including a long-standing partnership with Todd Energy For Wells, growth has always gone together with investing in its people. Developing capability, supporting apprenticeships, and fostering career pathways are central to how the company operates – something Taranaki Regional Operations Lead, Eli Waikawa, understands from personal experience. “I started my career with Wells as an apprentice and worked my way up over time to become a dual-trade Instrument and Electrical Senior Tradesperson,” says Eli. “After then spending two years leading an instrumentation and electrical team with an oil and gas operating company, I was delighted to returned to Wells to take on this leadership role and further develop my management capability.” Now responsible for supporting regional operations and apprenticeship training, Eli is passionate about growing the next generation of electricians. “We’re committed to giving apprentices hands-on experience and exposure to a wide variety of work. Because Wells operates nationwide, there’s great scope for people to specialise and continue growing their skills – it’s a hallmark of our culture.” That investment in people and capability underpins the company’s enduring relationship with Todd Energy for over 2 decades – a partnership built on trust, performance, and shared values. Senior Project Managers John Hooker and Alan Crossley have both worked with Todd on many small and large projects. They’ve been working with Todd Energy for around 20 years, delivering instrumentation and electrical projects and overseeing maintenance services across their Taranaki sites. “Right now, our teams are installing compressors on newly drilled wells and completing electrical systems for new wells at the Mangahewa Gas Field,” says Allan. “It’s always a great experience collaborating with Todd. They value quality and efficiency, and we’re proud of the positive feedback we continue to get on our commercial offerings, scheduling and quality of work.” Eli, John and Allan all agree that Todd Energy’s recognition at the recent Energy Excellence Awards, particularly for their community partnerships with local hapū, was well deserved. “Todd, like Wells, has deep roots in this region,” Eli adds. “We share the same commitment to doing things right – for our people, our clients, and our communities.” With a strong legacy of innovation, reliability, and collaboration, Wells continues to play a vital role in supporting Todd Energy’s operations and the wider energy sector across Aotearoa.
