30 | Humphries Construction T T Sue Russell Diverse company drives efficiencies Humphries Construction is part of a larger suite of companies capable of delivering turnkey property development, design-and-build, and construction projects. “Our clients understand the depth of our abilities and have had the experiences confirming we stand by our word.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT For Palmerston North-based Humphries Construction, 2026 will see another milestone, marking 30 years in business, and when Paul Humphries looks back on the journey he says it’s been one of seizing opportunities to evolve, with the goal always to enhance its service offering, build efficiencies and above all, a vertically integrated capability. The company is part of a larger suite of companies capable of delivering turnkey property development, design-and-build, and construction projects for their clients, many of whom have sought the business’s capabilities time and time again. “We’ve grown from just a construction company into other sectors of the construction market,” says Paul. “At the front end of this we’ve evolved into being multi-faceted with the ability to deliver all the disciplines that create end-to-end design-and-build projects for our clients.” Sam Butcher, the company’s operations manager, says that this breadth and depth of professional capability delivers timely, cost-efficient and seamless project experiences for their clients. With allied businesses, Pak Design, Precast Manawatu and Shed Ex in the Humphries Group mix, there’s a wealth of resourcing available to see projects completed in-house. “Flooring Xtra was a design build with Pak Design, while Cross Country Rentals harnessed Precast Manawatu and Shed Ex. The Stables Motel in Bulls is also a design build with Precast Manawatu. These allied businesses mean we can deliver real cost benefits and efficiencies that come from controlling the project through its entire journey,” Sam explains. And it’s not just to clients that the benefits flow. There’s a core value of enabling and encouraging young people that join the company to grow professionally, leading in time to leadership roles. “This is something we’re very strong on. I started here 15 years ago and worked myself up through opportunities given, to site- and project-management roles to now leading the delivery of our projects. This is a space where we try to build people up,” Sam says. With nearly three decades’ experience behind them, long-term and engaging relationships with clients have evolved, something Paul says creates a win-win reality for both parties. “Our clients understand the depth of our abilities and have had the experiences confirming we stand by our word. “We, in turn, understand their expectations and values. This makes for extremely efficient project development and delivery.” These days, Paul is mainly involved in property procurement and leasing, handing over the projects’ construction to Sam and the team at Humphries Construction. In all, about 50 staff work across the various divisions, and depending on the nature and scale of a project, labour-only building crews can be called upon. Paul is proud of the fact, too, that for many years Humphries Construction, as a major builder in the region, has supported the next generation of apprentice builders to come into the trades as well. In the development space, Sam says work is about to start on a 5-star green office build for Transpower in Palmerston North, while on the residential front, multi-spec homes are underway in Feilding, Palmerston North and Foxton. “We believe the economy is about to turn and the housing market will rebound, so we’re currently involved in a wide array of residential work from executive style to first-home buyer,” Paul says. Most of the company’s work is in the Manawatu; however, its own development work takes it further afield. Opportunities come, Paul says, from referrals and the people they know. “I don’t think we’ve ever had much of a quiet patch. Right now, there are plenty of opportunities and we’re flat out. We’re very strong in the design-and-build space.
