32 | Homes for all the family Each of the five homes features three bedrooms, offering more flexibility for families and multi-generational living. Bhupesh Suri - Miles Construction T T Virginia Wright REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT When Bhupesh and Sukanya Suri purchased 588 Fergusson Drive in Upper Hutt they initially worked with Prime Design to develop plans for six two-storey townhouses. As construction costs rose, however, and they reassessed community needs, they decided instead to build three single-storey stand-alone homes and a duplex. As first-generation migrants from India who have lived in New Zealand for over 15 years Bhupesh and Sukanya have helped many of their extended family members settle here. Now parents of two, they knew exactly what they wanted to achieve with their property investment. “We have strong family values and wanted to build homes that people can truly live in and enjoy,” says Bhupesh. “Most new builds in the area were two-storey townhouses, which didn’t suit elderly residents, people with mobility challenges, or young families, so we decided to cater to that need.” They worked closely on the revised consent plans with Miles Construction Ltd. who then partnered with McAlpine Construction for the build which is well on the way to bringing five more homes into a market crying out for housing. Each of the five homes features three bedrooms, a deliberate choice by the Suris to offer more flexibility for families and multi-generational living. They felt that offering the extra space would give people options they wouldn’t otherwise have, whether it was having grandchildren to stay or having a dedicated office for those working from home. Bhupesh says they are excited to be building something they couldn’t find for themselves back when they were looking. “When we visited the houses today, sunlight streamed through the windows.” “Sukanya and I talked about how, when we were renting, we would have loved a home like this, bright, open, and with a bit of lawn for the kids to play,” says Bhupesh. All five homes are designed for easy access, with two bathrooms, one of which is an ensuite. The kitchen and family bathroom are built along the shared wall of the duplexes, along the back firewall of the stand-alones, and all have skylights to bring in the natural light. Plenty of windows, open plan living, with double doors that open out towards a sunny patch of lawn, all contribute to the homes’ appeal, but the Suri’s believe it’s the location that is the key. The quiet neighbourhood has its own block of local shops including a dairy, a laundromat and a café. There’s a bus stop right outside, a primary school over the road, a secondary school within easy walking distance, and the Upper Hutt City Centre is only a 15-minute walk away for those that don’t want to take the bus. The Suris are now watching the market closely before deciding whether to rent or sell. Either way, they’re looking forward to seeing these homes come to life, filled with families who will enjoy them just as much as they enjoyed creating them. “We wanted to build homes that make living easier for families like ours,” says Bhupesh.
