By 2019 they had purchased the business together. With Rewa’s background at the local ITM and Russell’s extensive building experience, including serving as foreman at Affordable Sheds since 2004, they’ve built a strong, complementary partnership rooted in trust, practical know-how, and shared values. Affordable Sheds Wairarapa supplies structures manufactured by Cyclone Buildings New Zealand (formerly Fair Dinkum Sheds). Over the years, the business has evolved to offer cost-effective, high-quality buildings tailored to each client’s specific needs. Whether it’s a full build or a kit-set for self-construction, they provide end-to-end solutions across residential, industrial, rural, and commercial sectors. What sets Affordable Sheds apart is their collaborative, client-first approach. We always start with a conversation,” says Russell. “We talk through what the building will be used for, such as height, vehicle access, showroom or workshop space, office layout, then provide a ballpark budget. If that works for the client, we move to the next stage.” If the building’s use is commercial or industrial, the next stage includes preliminary fire design, structural engineering, and a concept plan drawn by a draftsman. “The concept drawing helps clients visualise the building and its internal layout. It also allows us to refine the budget, factoring in any site-specific challenges,” Russell explains. With deep knowledge of current building regulations and consent requirements, Affordable Sheds Wairarapa helps clients navigate complexities they might not anticipate, especially in industrial and commercial builds. Their expertise also extends to advising on development returns, as demonstrated in a recent project on Thistle Ave, Masterton. Originally planned as a single building with three tenancies, The Poplars Industrial Estate site was reimagined by Affordable Sheds into two identical buildings with three titles each. “We wanted a solution that would appeal to other clients too,” says Russell. “Often, the cost of land and construction doesn’t stack up against potential lease returns. This design offers a more viable 6–7% return for those building to lease.” Their success stems not only from technical expertise, but also from strong relationships with trusted local subcontractors, from drainlayers and electricians to tilers and designers. These are the very kinds of businesses that have already purchased four of the initial six premises, attracted by the ability to customise their layouts and secure a space tailored to their operational needs. Affordable Sheds Wairarapa continues to grow through word-of-mouth, repeat clients, and a reputation for going the extra mile. Whether it’s a small rural shed or a multi-tenancy commercial build, Russell and Rewa bring the same level of care, clarity, and commitment to every project. It’s a model built on collaboration, local knowledge, and a genuine desire to help clients succeed.
