Skilled team lead the way at Phoenix Civil Cambridge civil construction company, Phoenix Civil, supplies a range of services to council, government and private clients, across subdivisional, water and waste-water treatment systems, drainage and associated infrastructure. After several successful years working in post-quake Canterbury and, at that time, employing a team of 12, Phoenix Civil relocated back to Cambridge and has been gainfully engaged in a large number of projects and now has a team of 25 skilled construction personnel. “This business has a family culture, based on good people at and outside of work. We are ambitious for sure and with all the major infrastructure work taking place around the Waikato, the future is looking very positive,” says General Manager, Inniss Anderson. Phoenix Civil was sub-contracted by Spartan Construction for the $25million waste-water upgrade at Waikeria Prison which included the piping of that waste through to Te Awamutu. The project involved the installation of the 280PE rising main between the new pumping station within Waikeria Prison through to Kihikihi township. The pipeline generally traversed along the edge of roads and a large section of the pipeline was located along SH3 which has signi icant tra ic lows and included the Punui bridge crossing. “We basically re-designed the entire pipeline in liaison with the main contractor and Council. The reasons for the re-design were due to avoiding existing services, reducing disturbance to the public and maximising project e iciencies.,” Inniss explains. Additionally, to the 280PE rising main Phoenix were also required to upgrade approx. 550m of 225dia uPVC sewer gravity main within Kihikihi. This pipework was installed in excess of 3 metres deep within an existing carriageway that contained a signi icant amount of existing services. “During the project we worked closely with the main contractor and Council to minimise the inconvenience to the public caused by the physical works. Communication is key to achieving this, and it was pleasing to get positive feedback frommembers of the public in recognition of the e ort our team put into achieving this.” Asked what distinguishes Phoenix Civil from other businesses in the infrastructure game Inniss says “it is the way the company works together”. “Culture is massive in this business. No-one is bigger than anyone else. When we employ, we look of course at the skill-set but even more important to us is the attitude and character of that person to it into our way of being.” Phoenix Civil is busy on several signi icant projects around the Waikato, including, since September last year, the development of Stages 3A & 3B of the Northgate Industrial development within Horotiu, just north of Hamilton. He’s most proud of two things concerning the company. One is exceeding the client’s expectations in terms of project delivery and outcome and two, the personal development of the young sta coming through the business. “The guys generally work in pods of 3 – 5 and we always aim to balance these pods with the right amount of experience with youth. We pick our sta purely on character, personality and the potential for individual growth. We spend allot of time and e ort on our team encouraging personnel development.” With capabilities in a broad range of specialist civil work Phoenix Civil provides solutions for all earthworks, drainage, roading, utilities as well as water and wastewater infrastructure.
