Proud to support University of Waikato with The P ā project. Providing quality, innovative engineered timber solutions for more than 60 years As project lead for developing the cultural narrative of The Pā, the University’s Director of Regional Engagement Joe Macfarlane has been instrumental in community engagement around the project. “The Pā will proudly honour the history and heritage of the region and the mana of Waikato Tainui and the Kīngitanga, extending to the broader tribal connections across the central North Island, and it is a privilege and a challenge to be working on this project,” Joe says. “One of the first steps in progressing the concept of a new University marae was to meet with King Tūheitia to outline the concept and vision and to receive his endorsement. That was followed by the establishment of a lead advisory group, consisting of some of the University’s most senior Māori experts and scholars to actively inform the design of The Pā throughout. It’s given real life and meaning to the process.” The University has a working relationship with a team of Waikato Tainui carvers and art- ists, who will bring to life the narratives of The Pā through the installation of cultural artworks and thresholds in what will be a world-class university setting. “There are a number of key themes and concepts that will be reflected. We are in the heart of Waikato Tainui and the Kīngitanga, and The Pā will embrace this special heritage and identity. The complex will also embrace the diversity of the many cultures and eth- nicities of the University community, and this inclusivity will be reflected in the design and the stories that are told within.” Te Kohinga Mārama, the existing Univer- sity marae, has served the campus well and seen thousands of students graduate, and its future is under deliberation. Any plans for Te Kohinga Mārama will be handled with great care, given its history and significance. At 7200qsm The Pā is the largest single building on site. Along with the wharenui and the social hub, it will also house Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao, the Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies, as well as reception, ad- ministrative and executive spaces, something Professor Jones is very much looking forward to. “The Pā will really bring so many important elements of University life together,” he says. Construction of the facility is scheduled to be completed mid-2022. Talk to us today, the feature profile experts Phone: 03 983 5500 waterfordpress.co.nz PROFILE YOUR PROJECT...
