Company general manager Marty Price says that when company owners Cole and Sammy-Jo Wenmoth decided to take a step back from the operational aspects a year or so ago and appointed Marty to the role, this has freed up resources to take a different approach. “We are establishing a robust company culture based on being supportive, engaging, inclusive, which has resulted in an even more focused team approach,” he says. The benefit for clients is better collaboration and a more cohesive overall direction. Marty says the outcome has been new business lines and strong relationships forged. ICL Construction has a proud history within the Taranaki region, commencing as Ingle- wood Concrete Works back in the early 1980’s. The present directors purchased the busi- ness in 2016 and today ICL Construction is one of the largest specialist construction firms in the region. Cole brings many years experience as a qualified quantity surveyor and construction manager and is also a qualified architectural designer. He is a member of Architectural Designers New Zealand, New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors, the Certified Builders Association of New Zealand and a Licensed Building Practitioner. He continues to act in the capacity of managing director and senior quantity surveyor in the company. Sammy-Jo acts in capacity as the businesses financial director. Dave Corney was appointed as shareholder and construction director in 2020 and Marty says that he is a highly experienced construction professional and former owner and director of a very successful construction business based in Whanganui adding consid- erable value to the mix. Other key changes that have led to the company’s new approach include forming separate divisions in the ICL Group in 2019: ICL Construction, ICL Precast, ICL Residential, ICL Development and ICL Civil. Marty says that ICL’s sister company ICL Assets acquired Turnkey Civil (previously Civilscape) and that business is now incorporated into the wider ICL Construction group of divisions as ICL Civil. He says that this provides ICL with strong expertise in the civil sectors for both its own projects and for external clients. While ICL Construction remains based in New Plymouth, it operates its precast instal- lation division across the North Island of New Zealand as a sub-contractor together with se- lect projects as main contractor or partnering with strategic alliances it has developed within the industry, says Marty. The company’s push into property devel- opment has been heralded with the purchase of a 2,039sqm site at 21 Constance Street, Waiwhakaiho, New Plymouth. The project is being undertaken as a joint venture and will most likely see 15 three level townhouses built on the site commencing in the second quarter of 2021 with the project due for completion in 2022. Marty says each townhouse will be approximately 150sqm and include three bedrooms and a garage. ICL is presently in negotiations with Kāinga Ora on a large social housing development as developer and builder and partnering with award winning architects on other public and social housing initiatives. ICL is also an approved builder of the Bun- nings’ - range of kitset homes. Home options include compact or family-size homes with design, construction, and finishing touches all included at a fixed cost. ICL is presently con- structing two of the homes in its yard ready for transportation to sites. Marty says that ICL’s plans for the future are looking good, with further development of the ICL Group over the coming 24 months. Current projects include the construction of a large grain store at Ports of Tauranga due for completion May 2021 and various projects for the Ministry of Education and a large refuse transfer station for Envirowaste to name a few. A project the company construct- ed recently, the Archer Daniels Midland feed meal bulk storage and processing facility, won silver at the 2020 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards. “We’re used to undertaking complex, chal- lenging projects, which is why our clients keep coming back to us,” says Marty. “Our focus is to keep on doing what we do well along with constantly enhancing our offering to clients.” Photo: Sandra Henderson Photography
