One-stop-shop for lawns PRODUCTION Mike and Debbie Glasson have been in the business of taking care of client’s lawn needs for 19 years and since establishing Lawn & Turf Contracting in 2006 have grown in reputation and in size. Today, they lead a busy company based in Paterangi near Ohaupo, just south of Hamilton, employing 25 staff and offer clients a raft of services including lawn establishment and maintenance, irrigation and drainage systems, landscaping and hydroseeding. When Zealong Tea Estate moved to their site north-east of Hamilton they wanted the estate to re ect the standard of care they place into making their world-re- nowned teas, so it was no surprise they turned to Lawn & Turf to establish their lawn and design and install irrigation and drainage. Hydraulic Mulch Seeding (Hydroseeding) is a specialty. Lawn & Turf Contracting service both the civil and domestic markets, using a range of hydroseeding machines. “It’s an excellent way to create a lawn over a large area, often in dif cult situations, quickly,” says Debbie. Grass seed is sprayed evenly over a site using a wood bre mulch, which creates a medium for the seed to grow in, while retaining moisture and substantially reduc- ing the growth of weeds while the seed establishes. Unlike many other companies using a Hydroseeding system, at Lawn and Turf Contracting only wood bre mulch is used with its superior ability to retain moisture and stickability giving quality results.’ Lawn & Turf Contracting has three special- ised Hydroseeding machines and Debbie says a focus is on reinvesting capital into the latest and best technologies as these evolve. Asked why the company has grown from strength to strength, servicing the greater Waikato, Debbie puts it down to the range of services, creating a ‘one-stop shop’ experience for clients. “We do it all and our large eet covers all aspects of lawn and turf management.” Debbie also says that Mike and her have worked really hard on the company culture to make an enjoyable environment for the team. “We don’t look just at skills, we also look at work-ethic and the ability to be a team member. We’re quite capable of training up new staff in how to do the work so their personality and drive are key factors in our employment selection process.” Lawn & Turf have also built up strong pro- fessional relationships with building com- panies and property developers. This has future-proofed the business to a degree by ensuring regular work all year round. “We like the size we are at the moment and are very proud of what we have achieved, however we will grow as de- mand for all the services we offer grows.”
