My uncle was a well thought of builder in Wanganui right up till he retired at the age of 73 - so he inspired me. I do this work because I love carpentry and we pride ourselves on high quality. “That pride is something I pass on to my own team. A wee while back my first year ap- prentice framed up a set of stairs and I didn’t do that till my second year. I said that’s pretty impressive—take a photo and be proud.” Scott has been building for 16 years - com- pleting his apprenticeship in both Wanganui and Wellington - before moving back to his beloved hometown of Wanganui in 2016 to establish SJP Builders and stamp his own mark on the building industry. Growth has been steady through word of mouth and a reputation well earned for quali- ty workmanship and integrity—qualities Scott is very proud of. “You go out there and do a good job—peo- ple speak highly of builders that do a good job. I’ve now got three apprentices, a qualified tradesman and I’ve just taken on a very good foreman after my last one retired.” Based in Wanganui, the large volume of new builds in Wanganui has kept SJP Builders busy over the last year with most of this year already booked up. While operating throughout the Central North Island, SJP Builders mainly operates in the Wanganui area doing residential work “I like to come up with smarter ideas and push the boundaries - I’m forever challenging draughtsman on their ideas and concepts.” along with light commercial, pole sheds, fit outs for farm buildings and offices, pool, decks and pergolas. Scott says that at this time of year everyone wants decks built. Last year SJP Builders was engaged to construct a swimming pool along with 70sqm deck with glass balustrade on a hillside site. A complex project that required a corner of the hillside to be dug away, at its lowest point the deck was 300mm off the ground and 3.8m at the highest point. “That project really set us up, earning us a very good reputation for undertaking chal- lenging hillside projects.” With SJP Builders celebrating its fifth birth- day this month, Scott says the ambition is to focus on challenging projects that require a greater level of thought in both planning and execution. “I like to come up with smarter ideas and push the boundaries - I’m forever challenging draughtsman on their ideas and concepts. “Push the boundaries and do it to a high standard - that’s what we like to do. Anything is possible and we like to do projects out of the ordinary that stand out.” Reflecting on what has underpinned his success, Scott says; “Trust your instincts and the process, work hard and do a good job - you can stand back and be really proud for a very long time.”
