BUILDING Hawke’s Bay Homes was one of several stakeholders who promoted the variation to broaden out the definition of what would be viewed as approved dwelling. “We believe there’s many advantages in building a larger camp model in a central location where workers can be transported to their place of work. “A priority was to keep RSE workers togeth- er in a well-built, warm, enjoyable and safe housing environment.” This change enables Hawke’s Bay Homes to construct a purpose-built facility on a 1ha site at Irongate, equivalent to 30 x 3-bedroom homes in town, which has previously been the norm. This demand for town housing has placed more unwanted pressure on the current housing availability crisis. “The horticulture sector has always strug- gled to find enough suitable accommodation in Hawke’s Bay and the annual influx of RSE workers has added further strain. “This RSE camp, provides much-needed room to house these workers who are so valu- able to our local and national economy, while at the same time minimising their costs, so that more money flows back to their islands and villages.” It is predicted that by 2022 the need for RSE workers in Hawke’s Bay will double from 4000 to in excess of 8000. Each bedroom has an air-conditioning unit and room for a TV with shared kitchen and social spaces. The Irongate facility, owned by Irongate RSE Ltd, will be leased to RSE employers. With Covid-19, John says, the benefits of such a camp-like facility are really coming into play. “They can arrive here and self-isolate in secure premises.” Care for seasonal workers is a priority and being able to keep groups from the same country together has many advantages. Stage one of the RSE camp was completed in 2019 and accommodates 48 people while stage two is nearly completed. In total, the facility will cater for 98 people.
