Specialising in doors, windows, kitchen, bathroom cabinets, wall units and shelving, Wackrows caters for all wooden joinery requirements from the basic ranges through to exclusive, custom designed hand-crafted timber creations. Originally founded by Gus Wackrow, today the company is owned by Carl Riley & Bryce Norris – both qualified joiners and Liam Wack- row. Each spent their early days sweeping the Wackrows workshop floor. Carl and Bryce completed their appren- ticeships and Liam, who first got involved at the age of two, waving around tradesmen’s hammers and planes before being promoted to sweeper boy once able to hold a broom, is involved in the joinery side of the business. Carl and Liam have both been President of the local Waikato Master Joiners chapter with Liam progressing to become the New Zealand Master Joiners President. In 2019, Liam was awarded the Owen Wright Memorial award for his services to the industry in many different areas He is pleased to have been heavily involved in the NZS:4211 Compliant Timber Joinery project, from its conception in 2009 to now. Liam says for many years, timber joinery was an acceptable solution with profiles which had not been tested or qualified to NZS:4211, the standard for the performance testing for water and air penetration in windows and doors for exterior use. Kelly Deeks In order to achieve a solution tested to these performance requirements, a group of New Zealand Master Joiners began working on a rigorous weather-tightness testing pro- gramme on a number of profiles for windows and doors, developing the NZS:4211 Compli- ant Timber Joinery suite. Now timber windows and doors, including the glazing system, can be tested, labelled, and certified as complying with the wind zone within which the products are installed. Liam says the demand for compliant timber joinery is growing, with builders, architects, and regulatory authorities now regularly asking for it. Wackrows now manufactures the majority of their exterior joinery as compliant products and provides expert craftsmanship for not only doors and windows but also cabinetry. Liam says Wackrows specialises in wooden joinery in a wide range of sizes, styles, and timbers. “We can produce everything from wooden sliding windows, casement windows, double hung windows, bay windows, awn- ing windows to French doors, bi-fold doors, tri-fold doors, sliding doors, grand entrance doors, or internal doors. “We follow environmentally friendly practic- es therefore our timber supplies in New Zea- land come from sustainably managed forests, and imported timbers are environmentally certified,” says Liam. “These include Rimu, Totara, Beech, Matai, Macrocarpa, and Pine from New Zealand, Oak, Ash and Cedar from North America, Oak and Beech from Europe, Oak, Ash and Jarrah from Australia, and Kwila, Teak, Rosewood and Pacific Kauri from Asia.” He says Wackrow’s Joinery has been busy working on residential projects since Covid lock-down.
