It’s a profession he is passionate about. “I find that creating beautiful purpose-built and designed spaces for clients an exciting process; one that is full of engagement with them from start to finish,” Tim says. He leads a team of technicians, project managers and administration staff, who collectively offer clients an end-to-end design and build experience. With so many years in architectural practice, Tim has accrued strong working relationships with tradesmen and craftsmen that he knows are capable of building to the exacting stand- ards he consistently demands. Clients benefit from ongoing engagement throughout the construction phase and Tim believes that for them, just dealing with the one company, makes for a smooth and enjoy- able build. “Often it feels daunting to those having their homes built, because it is probably their single biggest investment and it matters so much to them, so by supplying design and project management services, it makes everything more simple and stress-free.” Asked how he found the team he has, Tim says he’s evolved a solid interviewing process and seeks an innate sense of character, one that he knows will fit the team. It’s a highly productive team, a bit like the seamless purr of a smooth-running Zephyr engine. For over thirty years, Tim has been design- ing, documenting and overseeing the con- struction of properties ranging from seaside, cliff top, cliff faced structurally challenging buildings in Auckland, hunting lodges in the Mamaku’s and a myriad of other fasci- nating projects like sprawling farm houses, award-winning deer handling facilities, and commercially farming service centres, to name a few. “The relationship between the client and architect has to be built on trust, and all parties need to be able to relate openly and honestly.” At a more fundamental level Tim says there are good reasons to engage an architect to oversee the build. “There are ever-changing Council regula- tions, standards and requirements to take into account for consent and we navigate through this maze on your behalf.” His affinity with design and space started back at Intermediate School when he attend- ed St Pat’s in Te Awamutu. He still remembers a woodwork teacher presenting the class with a set-square and T-square, saying this was all a person needed to make a design. From that point on, Tim knew he would be working in some way with the design of buildings. Today, Gisler Architects is a preferred archi- tectural and project management business for the Ministry of Education, a history that dates back to the nineties. He’s been involved with designing second- ary, primary and pre-schools for years and understands well how the system works espe- cially with the Ministry of Educations numer- ous regulations, requirements and standards. Tim’s many years as a Board of Trustee member places him in a great position to “The relationship between the client and architect has to be built on trust, and all parties need to be able to relate openly and honestly.” understand the intricate needs of all parties, including the Board of Trustees, the School budgetary requirements, Council regulations and the Ministry of Education’s standards.
