| 31 Tauhara Geothermal Power Station ENERGY The Tauhara power station is Contact Energy’s second geothermal development at the Tauhara field near Taupo. The Tauhara Geothermal Power Station is the largest industrial project under construction in Taupo at the moment and Cheal is proud to have played an integral part from the outset, says Cheal’s Project Survey Manager David Stewart. Cheal provided site supervision of geotechnical investigations and continues to provide project-critical surveys for structural and civil works associated with the construction of the generator building and cooling towers for lead contractor, Naylor Love. “Setout survey for piling was our initial focus, but now piling is complete, this has shifted to setout for the main structures,” explains David. Cheal also provided setout for foundation excavations, and utilised advanced RPAS (drone) technology for measuring the earthworks volumes of the 10-metre-deep foundation excavation for the generator building. Cheal recently upgraded its RPAS equipment to a DJI M300 aircraft with Zenmuse L1 lidar unit. “The system integrates a lidar module, high-accuracy IMU, and a camera on a 3-axis stabilized gimbal. Lidar enables terrain to be measured directly instead of being derived from imagery. Data captured in a single mission can be used for multiple purposes with outputs including imagery, terrain surface and topographic information,” explains David. He says that use of drone technology for earthworks volumes and topographic surveys is an example of Cheal’s innovative approach. “Surveys by drone are a safe alternative for our employees in otherwise di icult or dangerous situations. It’s a smart tool providing accurate and detailed information in a cost-e ective, timely manner”. An award-winning, multi-disciplinary consultancy, Cheal o ers extensive expertise across the ields of engineering, surveying, resource management planning and 3D laser scanning.
