40 | ATI Engineering ENGINEERING ATI enjoys steady growth to meet local demand T from page 38 ATI Engineering employs a team of 35, in a 3500sqm well-equipped workshop and office facility at Hastings. “I think the Gateway programme concept is an excellent one as it provides those still in school, and not certain yet about what they want to do as a career, with opportunities to experience the whole range of engineering work we take on. We soon see who are the ones with potential.” As the scope and size of projects has evolved, so too has the capability to take these on by the acquisition of heavy engineering infrastructure, including four mono rail cranes and a two-axis gantry crane extending 48m x 24m. “This enables us to work on small, medium and large-scale projects within our workshop.” Simon says that while Covid-19 has created some supply issues for the businesss, the impact is manageable. “It has meant that we’ve needed to source product from what is within New Zealand but generally work and projects have proceeded well. It just adds another component into the planning stages to ensure we have what we need when we need it. Our clients generally have been very understanding of the constraints we’re operating in.” In his role, Simon oversees all elements of the company and gets involved in design, quoting, looking after client relationships and staff. Finding more employees comes with its fair share of challenges at this time. “We’ve tried to advertise in the local newspaper just to see if there is someone local who would like to come and work for us. I think most engineering companies are in the same situation as us.” When Business Central spoke with Simon the company was in the process of replacing a couple of CNC machining centres. Two new machines, from Taiwan are due to be commissioned, with more up-to-date technologies on board. With the facilities and skill-base it has ATI Engineering is capable of undertaking all forms of engineering work, with the exception of large-scale structural steel. “There are other companies in Hawke’s Bay that specialise in this. We’ll do smaller bespoke structural steel work for clients.” As for the situation of the business nearly 30 years after it formed, Simon feels the company’s future is secure, with the quality of the team, the array of services they offer and the industries they serve. “The Gateway programme concept is an excellent one as it provides those still in school, and not certain yet about what they want to do as a career, with opportunities to experience the whole range of engineering work we take on.” STEEL SOLUTIONS FOR EVERY PROJECT steelandtube.co.nz Steel & Tube are your one stop shop and offer an extensive range of products, including sheet, coil and plate, stainless and engineering steels, nuts and bolts through to roofing, reinforcing bar/ mesh and structural steel.
