46 | CONTRACTING Tidy Slabs Foundation work made simple Kelly Deeks An on-location perspective shot of a new foundation build. “We are methodical with how we employ staff, and train them up to leadership level, so we always have people on our team who are constantly growing into leaders.” Young concrete foundation specialist Tidy Slabs is capitalising on its demand advantage with the Wellington firm expanding into three more locations at the start of this year. Tidy Slabs started in Wellington in 2016, and by 2019 had cemented a place at number 22 on the Deloitte Fast 50 index with almost 268% growth in revenue. Going on to consolidate, growth has settled over the past two years, and is set to spike again this year with three new branches now operating in the Wairarapa, Levin, and Auckland. Tidy Slabs managing director Andy Garvie says the team at Tidy Slabs works with builders and developers in high volume situations, where consistent delivery is hugely important. “Foundation work is widely known to be the hardest part of a build, but we believe it can be simple,” he says. “With a well defined process and a high standard which is maintained every time, we create confidence in every project we’re involved in.” Consistency is key, and Tidy Slabs keeps it at the heart of its work. Based on industry experience, Tidy Slabs has created a system which addresses the pains the construction industry is all too familiar with. “Our procedures and processes are strictly laid out, followed, and communicated, every step of the way. This requires our staff to be knowledgeable, skilled, and consistent, and these attributes have become essential to our business.” Tidy Slabs takes full leadership and ownership of its concrete foundation work, providing a strategically managed, end to end service every time. Detailed management takes the burden away from the client, who is provided trust and assurance in a solid process and can concentrate on other important aspects of the project. “From early stage planning through to completion, our team works in high volume situations where we partner with our clients, we learn from each other, and we refine the system to deliver consistent results and high-quality concrete foundation construction.” Tidy Slabs’ end to end service includes design assessment and tendering, with the firm involved from the early stages of construction providing support and expert advice. Earthworks are known to be a tricky part of the build, but Tidy Slabs’ expert team are fully trained and well equipped to tackle any challenge. Then the slab work, where Tidy Slabs is strong on expertise. “We’ll complete the concrete slab then leave the site fully prepared for a smooth transition and easy hand over to the builder.” Prior to its expansion, Tidy Slabs had worked with partners from Auckland to Wellington to deliver more than 1500 individual concrete foundations in five years. In the coming five years, Tidy Slabs aims to have a presence North Island wide, with new branches planned for Northland, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, and Taranaki. To get the edge over competitors also operating in these areas, Tidy Slabs wants to take it further than merely servicing these areas, by actually being local to them. “We want to put our flag up in each of these places, with local managers and local staff who care about that community and build those relationships.” He says while New Zealand’s housing shortage brings major demand for new housing, the labour shortage makes it difficult to meet that demand. In a bid to ease this pressure, Tidy Slabs focuses on two key details. One - that every client has an exceptional experience; and two - that all staff will grow along with Tidy Slabs. “We are methodical with how we employ staff, and train them up to leadership level, so we always have people on our team who are constantly growing into leaders. “We have a great team and I am immensely proud of them. I feel privileged to be able to play a part in the developmental journey of each one of our staff.” CONTRACT LABOUR HIRE Servicing the lower North Island we provide people solutions for employers and futures for workers.
