48 | CONTRACTING Biocycle - Hamilton Waste-water treatment specialists up the ante The Biocycle treatment system is a single moulded concrete tank with five internal chambers with each chamber performing a specific process. “All I really had to do was establish this company around honesty and transparency and deliver top service. We know we have a technology that ticks all the boxes.” Mike Tasker, Manager of Hamilton-based lifestyle waste-water/sewage treatment specialists ‘Biocycle’, says that when taking over an existing company that had been somewhat neglected in its early years he saw the potential and quality in the product, rolled his sleeves up and just gone on with transforming it. “Biocycle as a brand and all the benefits that come from using the system, needed to be publicized. “It’s a very competitive environment we operate in and a big decision for rural lifestyle owners to make, so I set about ensuring the reliability of our technology and the integrity of our service was shared with the market.” Another important strategic decision Mike and the team had to make was whether to market the protect extensively in the South Island. Given the cost of transporting large heavy structures, the pragmatic decision was made to concentrate on the North Island, while linking with a partner who looks after the South Island domain. “We also ensured our independent network of drain-layers and installers, were top quality operators in their own right.” Spurring sales has been the situation of a buzzing real-estate market, partly due to COVID and people choosing to leave the city and establish a home close to urban centres but with a country look and feel. This is the market that Biocycle serves. “All I really had to do was establish this company around honesty and transparency and deliver top service. We know we have a technology that ticks all the boxes.” Mike says that fundamental to Biocycle’s success in a competitive industry is the refinement of technology originally developed back in the 1990’s. “Our system is simple and very stable and once installed regular 6-monthly servicing will keep it working very well.” The Biocycle treatment system is a single moulded concrete tank with five internal chambers with each chamber performing a specific process. Sue Russell The first two chambers of the Aerated Wastewater Treatment System separates the fats from solids, where naturally occurring anaerobic bacterial organisms digest solids. The water trapped between the fats floating above and the sludge that falls to the bottom then moves into the third chamber where aerobic bacteria further deals to any remaining suspended organic particles. Finally the fifth chamber has an energy efficient pump specifically designed for human effluent discharge. The pump turns on automatically when required, discharging clean water ideal for irrigating trees and landscaped gardens. “What is so great about this system is that Biocycle turns human waste into a really useful resource, sparing water falling from the sky, in our rivers and waterways, from being used in these garden situations. Water is likely to become the most valuable commodity in the world over the next decade and we’re proud of how we are contributing to its better use.” Biocycle tanks, manufactured by a contractor in Hamilton are built to last 50 years. Positioning the tanks in the ground is precision work, undertaken by experienced drainlayers, who prepare the earth to ensure there is no subsequent subsidence. “Concrete is a very stable material and a great insulator.” Sharing insight from an industry perspective Mike says there is a collective growing frustration at the lack of leadership by central Government, to ensure there are similar standards applied throughout the country to the treatment and discharge of human waste. “Regional Councils are making their own rules, making it hard for manufacturers to prove compliance and to stop rogues from making dodgy systems at less cost that simply don’t work long-term and create all sorts of problems in the process.” Mike is driven by a deep care and concern about the environment and he thinks the Government needs to step up its attention to water management compliances well beyond the current focus on the dairy sector. “Septic tanks are failing and causing contamination in areas such as Piha and the West Auckland lagoon. “The good solid players in our industry are ready and wanting to deliver solutions but it needs a clear mandate from Government. “Sadly bureaucracy is ruling rather than common-sense and practicality.” Phone: 03 983 5500 waterfordpress.co.nz Your Business, Your Industry, Your News.
