| 63 BUILDING Randall Construction This stunning Ohiwa house took 18 months to complete Stunning home a big winner T Hugh de Lacy Paul Randall doesn’t want his award-winning Gisborne-based Randall Construction business to grow any bigger than it is because he’d have to spend too much time organising and not enough on the tools himself. Paul’s company has just five staff, including himself, usually working on separate projects employing two staff each, and himself switching between them as required. “I’m quite happy with the size of the company as it is because it lets me stay on the tools, and also it lets me ensure that the quality is right up there,” Paul says. Randall Construction works mostly in the Gisborne countryside, doing anything from pole sheds to renovations to architecturally designed houses, and the success of his business formula is borne out by a succession of awards in the Master Builders’ House of the Year competition. Typical of the company’s versatility and quality was the complex house-build for a Gisborne couple who were moving to Ohiwa in the Bay of Plenty to retire, and wanted Paul and his team to pave the way for them. The couple already had a 150qsm bach at Ohiwa, and initially Paul was asked to renovate and extend it, but once on the job the old building was found to be not up to renovation scratch, so Paul ended up pulling it down and building a completely new house of 300qsm in its place. This involved Paul and two of his employees leaving Gisborne early on a Monday morning, staying in accommodation provided in the Bay during the week, and returning home on Friday. Meanwhile, a second Randall Construction crew of two was working on another house back in Gisborne. The Ohiwa house took 18 months to complete, which meant a lot of travelling for Paul and his staff – something he would not have contemplated but for his knowing the client couple as Gisborne locals. However the rewards came when the house won the Supreme Award for the East Coast region in the $1m-$2m House of the Year category last year. That house, and another that Randall Construction built in Gisborne, also went on to gain two Gold Awards in the national competition. Paul got into building fresh out of high school in 2003 – in fact he was still at school when he gave local builder Francis Yates a ring one night asking about a career in building, and being hired on the spot. He quit school the next day and, four years later, completed his carpentry apprenticeship. He continued to work for Francis Yates for a further seven years before launching out on own in 2014. Today Randall Construction is thriving, with plenty of work on the horizon. This rosy situation has been achieved despite the company spending nothing on advertising: because of his involvement in local sports and the community, especially in the Ngatapa district south of Gisborne, he’s well-enough known for the work to find him by word of mouth. “As a result I’m able to fully enjoy the Gisborne lifestyle,” Paul says. “I’m quite happy with the size of the company as it is because it lets me stay on the tools, and also it lets me ensure that the quality is right up there.” COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL anzakholdings@outlook.com 027 522 4076 Proud to support: Randall Construction CHARACTER ROOFING CALL NOW for a FREE QUOTE PETE CLAFFEY • 021 272 1785 peter@characterroofing.co.nz www.characterroofing.co.nz LIMITED • Specialising in Long-run roofing • Membrane installing • Commercial, residential farm building, maintenance programmes • New roofs, re-roofs, alterations • All staff trained in fall arrest and harness use and rescue • All work guaranteed Talk to us today, the feature profile experts Phone: 03 983 5500 waterfordpress.co.nz PROFILE YOUR PROJECT...
