64 | BUILDING Quality Builders 2005 ‘Feel-good project’ well underway T T Karen Phelps Quality Builders undertakes a broad range of construction projects including new residential and light commercial, additions and alterations and earthquake strengthening. “We’re very proud to be creating more than a building; this will be is an important environmental and cultural learning facility for Wairarapa people for generations into the future.” Quality Builders has been engaged to deliver the Te Wānanga Taiao education and accommodation centre, the centrepiece of Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre expansion. Quality Builders is completing the development, which will comprise accommodation for forty people, a commercial kitchen and a marae, covering an area of 1000sqm. Quality Builders owner and director Shane Lehmstedt says it’s a great project to be involved in – not just from a build perspective but because the centre will host schools and community groups undertaking environmental education and cultural learning at Pūkaha. The Pūkaha Board is undertaking the project along with its partners Rangitāne and Te Papa Atawhai - the Department of Conservation. It has received funding from the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund. “We’re very proud to be creating more than a building; this will be is an important environmental and cultural learning facility for Wairarapa people for generations into the future,” says Shane. “It’s a real feel-good project for our team and we’re privileged to have the opportunity to be involved.” Due to difficult ground conditions, special equipment was brought in from Auckland for the job to put in screw piles and a wooden cassette floor was prefabricated and craned into place. Shane says that this is a first for the Wairarapa The other big challenges have been Covid lockdowns and supply chain complexities but Shane says the Quality Builders team has mitigated these through organisation and forward planning. He says the high wind zone, topography and working around native trees, plants and animals saw the Quality Builders team successfully manage these issues, reflecting the company culture and commitment to getting the job done no matter what. The project is on track for completion late 2022. Based in Masterton, Shane runs Quality Builders with his wife Grace. They started the company in 2005 with the solid foundation of Shane’s previous knowledge and experience as a builder, foreman and project manager. Quality Builders now has a team of nineteen staff including four apprentices. The company undertakes a broad range of construction projects including new residential and light commercial, additions and alterations and earthquake strengthening. Shane says the company will take on any project it feels it can add value to including new bathrooms, kitchens, fences, decks, and general maintenance. It also completes work on farms such as shed maintenance. The highly qualified Quality Builders team sets the company apart, says Shane. “We work well together and our biggest focus is on quality, making sure extra care is carried out on each job and everything is completed properly. “A house is the biggest purchase that our clients will ever make so there are no shortcuts. “We double and triple check everything from the ground up to make sure it is all exactly right so our customers are fully satisfied,” he explains noting that these high levels of quality control extend to the skilled team of Wairarapa based sub-contractors the company works with. Shane says construction in Wairarapa is as busy as he has seen it. “It’s never been this busy ever before. A lot of people are moving here because you can have such a great lifestyle here. “Of course, this has also meant the Quality Builders team is busier than ever as well. “We provide an honest, competitive service.
