Southcoast director Steve Roberts says its skillset honed on education projects benefits any type of residential and commercial build the company tackles as education projects require the team to keep to tight timeframes, deal with rigorous health and safety protocols and have strong communication with multiple stakeholders. “We’ve developed a real understanding of what it takes to complete a successful education project. “We work in with the school’s requirements, which sometimes means working after hours or in holidays to get things done. Of course health and safety is huge working in a live school environment and kids are often curious so we make sure everyone is safe at all times,” explains Steve. Vaccination mandates for the education industry have been a recent protocol that Southcoast has had to work through. “Everyone coming onto site needs to be vaccinated to keep everyone safe. “We’ve worked through this with both our own staff and also subcontractors to meet the new government requirements for the education sector.” Southcoast was started by Steve in 2003 in Wellington. Wife Gina joined the company as it grew taking on the company’s financial and administration role. In 2010 two carpenters working for the company became shareholders as it grew and in 2020 the Wellington company was sold to them leaving Steve and Gina the owners of Southcoast Construction New Plymouth. There are two other directors in Southcoast - Ross Lewis and Mitchell Smith - who are both project and site managers and have worked for the company for some time. Steve says the combination of the four directors’ talents ensure customers enjoy a personal building experience and a high quality end result every time. “Ross, Mitchell and I are all qualified builders and that makes a difference.
