Landmark Homes Gisborne is operating at the top of its game, having built three of New Zealand’s finest homes in 2021, as judged in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. Landmark Homes Gisborne took out a clean sweep of three gold awards and three regional category wins in the competition. Founding director Sam Bain says his company has built a solid reputation for pulling off even the most technical designs, and has the skills and resources to turn its clients’ dreams into reality. “I’ve been building homes in Gisborne for more than 16 years,” he says. “Many Gisborne sites are unique, hill or beachfront sites, and with us being on the East Coast, our views are to the south. Our design and build option is one of our most popular, to allow us to capture both the sun and the views.” Sam’s attention to detail on the building site continues through to his clients relationships, and he says he takes a personalised approach. “I like the clients to be there all the time, to call in every day and meet the builders, meet the plasterers, meet the painters, and be involved in making decisions. When you get a plan, there are quite a few different ways you can finish it, so I always try to get to know my clients well enough to find out exactly what they like, and what options are going to work for them.” Landmark Homes Gisborne’s New Home $600,000 - $750,000 gold and regional category winner is a 235sqm home on a hilltop with views over Tūranganui-a-Kiwa Poverty Bay and the rural aspect. Its asymmetrically pitched roofline creates a dramatic effect outdoors, and high raking ceilings and large windows indoors. The construction team had to contend with a steep driveway and minimal room to move around the house on site. But the result speaks of luxury and sophistication, and some very happy clients. Landmark Homes Gisborne’s New Home $750,000 - $1 million gold and regional category winner was also on a hilltop with panoramic views from two sides. Precisely engineered glazing takes in the vista, and ample eaves provide shelter. Sam says the home features a complex structural steel system which was craned in to site, and a complex cladding system with different types and sizes of shiplap weatherboard. “Our client had interesting taste,” he says. “But their ideas have worked, even though I might have doubted it before we did it. “Especially the red soffits. I thought are you sure you don’t want white? But seeing how it came together, it’s really striking. It was great to be able to work with some more colourful people.” Landmark Homes Gisborne’s third gold award and regional category win was in the New Home $1.5 million to $2 million category. A large scale and impressive home encompassing 669sqm, it has been cleverly designed to accommodate extended family, with five bedrooms each with their own ensuite, and a self-contained flat for grandparents. Huge, light filled living spaces flow on from a crisp and polished central kitchen, allowing the home owners to easily entertain on a large scale. A paved outdoor living area at the rear of the home enjoys a lush rural outlook and features a wood fire and a louvre roof that can be adjusted according to the weather.
