We strive for a high level of care and service, and an environment where nothing is too much trouble. Having travelled extensively overseas and seeing multi-disciplined medical centres in action, the couple thought the Wairarapa could benefit from the same. “The vision for Five Rivers Medical was to bring the health care services closer to the people,” says Lynnette. “We formed an advisory board to bring in the necessary skills to pull this together.” The board set about investigating what type of services could be attracted to such a facility. “We worked closely with Latitude Health, who is the private health provider in this area, and gained interest and commitment from a range of services, a number of which had not been available in the South Wairarapa region prior to Five Rivers Medical Centre opening<” says Lynette. The 8000sqm site on Bidwills Cutting Road now houses two buildings, the integrated health facility Five Rivers Medical Centre, as well as a new building for the Wellington Free Ambulance, housing two ambulances, a service vehicle, and on-site accommodation for ambulance staff. The health facility includes Greytown Medical; community and commercial pathology and medical laboratory Wellington SCL; Greyscale Ultrasound specialising in muscular-skeletal, obstetric, pregnancy, and vascular ultrasound; individual client centred ear care facility Easy Ear Care; rehabilitation gymnasium Healthfit Collective; The Physio Spot; Wairarapa DHB; a suite of community district nurses; pre and post operative care from Boulcott Specialists; primary care from Tu Ora Compass Health; and a well appointed community room for community use. Five Rivers Medical employs more than 45 full time staff and caters for up to 5000 patients. Designed by James Silverwood of Silverwood Architects, the building features a stunning cedar and schist exterior, while extensive parking and the surrounding landscaping is in keeping with Greytown’s heritage and history as the first town in New Zealand to celebrate Arbor Day. The name Five Rivers comes from the local Tauherenikau, Waiohine, Waingawa, Waipoua and Ruamahanga rivers, an important part of the lifeblood of the Lower Wairarapa Valley. “As Five Rivers Medical will be,” Shane says. Like any development project, there were a number of challenges during the planning and construction phases, including material delays and a Covid lockdown, but Shane says the great relationship with builders Riggz Zscohke along with excellent subcontractors allowed the process to meet its completion date in November 2021. Five Rivers Medical was blessed on November 1 and the Wellington Free Ambulance Building in early December. “We were not able to have a formal opening due to Covid restrictions, and we are unsure whether we will be able to do so which is disappointing,” Shane says. “However the most important aspect is the facility is now operational, and we take great delight in seeing the many patients visiting the facility along with the centrally positioned ambulance facility servicing the greater South Wairarapa.” Shane and Lynette have been overwhelmed by the community’s response to Five Rivers Medical and equally overwhelmed by the support they received from the medical and health sector and the South Wairarapa District Council. They are proud to be in a position to build such a magnificent facility which will provide the much needed healthcare services, now and into the future.
