For the team, it’s about providing carefully thought-through purpose-built facilities that bring a sense of stability to residents, coupled with a team of the very best managers and carers. “We have so many wonderful carers at our facilities. Many have been with us since we established and have a real calling to care for those with high special needs,” Director Tammy Pienaar says. It’s a real family affair at Kingswood Health, with Tammy’s sister Tonya Holroyd in charge of the day to day management and a shareholder in the business, along with Tammy’s husband, Rocco. “It works very well. Tonya manages the business on the ground, along with a team of well-qualified clinical staff. She is very experienced and understands how best to support the Residents and their families and the staff caring for them. This leaves me free to attend to the administration and long-term strategic planning.” Such is the quality of the care and systems in place that Kingswood Health’s rest-homes have each received four-year accreditation – the highest level possible, placing them in an elite group, each time that they have been audited over the ten years they have been in business. In Matamata Kingswood Health Care operates a 25-bed Dementia care unit along with respite beds, when available. There is also a 16-bedroom, some with ensuite, Rest Home facility. In Morrinsville, a bespoke men’s dementia unit has evolved, answering the needs of this group of residents. “We realised that the mix of dementia clients is a critical matter and that for the younger men in particular they need a specialised environment, so we have a dedicated space with a men’s shed, chicken-coop, vege garden for them to enjoy.” On the same site, is a new 16-bedroom, each with ensuite, Rest Home facility which opened in 2018. Most recently, the offering is expanding in Morrinsville at 14-16 Strathmore Street with a brand-new 30 bedroom High Care unit, designed to work flexibly, in terms of opening and closing spaces. “It’s a large building specifically designed to act in wings, with separate lounges, kitchen, bathroom and outdoor areas in each wing. It’s not hospital looking but rather a large house full of all the latest mod-cons.” The main contractors are a great team from ZB Homes, based in Te Awamutu, who have subcontracted to Well Built from Tirau, iSparx. Also from T.A. and Morrinsville Plumbing &Gas. Argus Fire Protection look after the Fire Safety of our business and other businesses such as Mitre 10 and Flooring Design Matamata play a large role in finishing it off”. The project commenced in June 2021 and is due to be completed mid April 2022. “Covid has played a role in lots of delays, but we have made up some time and are confident we’ll be open by May 2022”, says Tammy. “The biggest thing was to make sure we could use the building for different activities, so it has been designed to break down into smaller units as necessary. “It is going to be a really lovely building for both residents and staff to be in when completed.” Tammy says there is a noticeable trend of younger people presenting with dementia. “This means we have to give a lot of thought to how best to care for a wider range cohort into the future. “We’re sticklers for care of our residents. They have to be able to treat the rest home as their home. We tell them ‘This is your home and anyone who is visiting is visiting your home, not ours.’” Auditing of the rest-homes and specialist care spaces is a thorough two-day process with two or three auditors measuring performance against literally hundreds of standards. “It’s an intense time and Tonya and her team devote considerable time to ensuring that every policy and system we have developed is fulfilled to the highest standard possible. “That’s why we have the four-year accreditation; it’s proof of our day-to-day performance.” Asked whether this is the last new project Kingswood Healthcare is embarking on, Tammy’s response keeps a window of possibility open for the future. “Put it this way, right now I am saying that’s it.” “The biggest thing was to make sure we could use the building for different activities, so it has been designed to break down into smaller units as necessary.”
