Whanganui builder David Brown clocked up 12 years working for other building companies before taking the plunge to go out on his own in 2019, and today, David Brown Building is a well-established local business known for quality workmanship, attention to detail and stress-free service. David and wife Penny, who manages the administrative side of the business, employ a five-strong team of qualified builders and apprentices working across the Manawatū-Whanganui region and beyond. Having himself trained under an excellent carpenter, David takes pride in ‘making it right’ and enjoys sharing his expertise with keen young apprentices. A versatile builder with an eye for detail, David likes working on a range of projects from new home builds to kitchens and bathrooms, home alterations and repairs, commercial work and heritage buildings. “I enjoy building new homes, but also love doing renovations and alterations,” says David. “Older houses are a bit more challenging but they have so much character.” Reflecting on what can add most to a home’s value, David observes that retrofitting homes with double-glazing is a popular choice locally that’s making a massive difference to health and comfort. One of their clients recently made the comment that their home is also much quieter after having had double-glazing installed, with traffic noise being much less intrusive. “We also find that removing a wall between kitchen and dining spaces in an older home can add a lot of value. It will modernise the property so much and can be done reasonably economically.” No matter what the project, David Brown Building is dedicated to providing a quality service that’s cost-effective and timely. “A lot of people here know what we do,” says Penny. “We’ve always renovated the properties we’ve lived in from old villas to 1980s’ homes. David is known for his calm, no-stress personality. He gets everything sorted and nothing is a problem.” David Brown Building is both a Master Builder and licensed building practitioner, providing further assurance of a smooth process for clients. Since 2019, David Brown Building has completed many memorable builds, including a rural Whanganui home that is only the second strawbale passive house to be built in New Zealand. David and his team worked in conjunction with Straw Homes Hawke’s Bay to complete this unique home in late 2023. “The client deserves credit for driving this project,” says David. “She’s very passionate about eco-friendly architecture and materials. For example, she deliberately selected alternatives to pine, choosing macrocarpa for sub floors and framing. We often find our clients want to be hands-on and are heavily involved.” David and Penny enjoy giving back to their community. Their three young daughters are involved with the Wanganui Surf Club. Backed by a local fundraiser, the couple led a recent initiative to build a portable lifeguard tower for the club, which was unveiled in December 2024. “There are multiple rescues off our volatile local beach every summer,” says Penny. “ For all your Structural Needs WATERJET CUTTING • MACHINE SHOP • STAINLESS STEEL • CERTIFIED WELDING (STRUCTURAL & PIPE) • SHEET-METAL WORK PH: 06 344 4108 | 437 Heads Rd E: mike@eliteengineering.co.nz DESIGNED FOR LIFE Nulook™ Windows & Doors Wanganui is a local ly owned proud fami ly business providing the greater region wi th qual i ty Aluminum joinery for over 30 years.
