Ecobuild Developments BUILDING T T to page 118 Having built the most certified passive houses in New Zealand since it began 14 years ago, the nationwide Eco Build Developments network, trading as eHaus, was also instrumental in founding the Passive House Institute New Zealand (PHINZ). In 2012, eHaus co-founder Jon Iliffe collaborated with Kara Rosemeier, a passive house expert from Germany, along with other like-minded individuals, to establish PHINZ. This is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes education and advocacy for passive house principles nationwide. eHaus played a pivotal role in the completion of New Zealand’s first certified passive house, a key milestone that enabled PHINZ to become an affiliate of the International Passive House Association (iPHA). Instrumental in advancing passive house design-and-build projects across New Zealand, eHaus has constructed over 170 energy-efficient homes and achieved one of the highest rates of passive house certification. The IPHA consists of 22 affiliate organisations spanning 19 countries, all dedicated to knowledge sharing and advancement of energy-efficient building practices around the globe. Jon’s role on the board of PHINZ for several years enabled him to attend the IPHA annual board meeting of 2013, under the leadership of the founder of the passivhaus movement, Dr Wolfgang Feist. “That was quite a cool moment in time, and a wonderful opportunity to share with representatives from around the world,” says Jon, who stepped down from the PHINZ board in 2016. Not one to rest on his laurels though, Jon and the eHaus team have continued to grow the eHaus network of building professionals, who have designed and built multiple award-winning passive high-performance homes nationwide. “From Hehe Beach in the far north to Stewart Island in the south, we’ve become synonymous with high-performance design and construction,” says Jon.
