T T from page 134 Hutt City Council & Apollo Projects: Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness COMMUNITY Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness has earned a Green Star Five rating for its environmentally sustainable design and build, and contributes to Hutt City Council’s goal of reducing emissions to net zero by no later than 2050. Despite a footprint more than 25% larger, annual carbon emissions are expected to be 28% lower than the old facility. A highly efficient water filtration system and continuous water-quality monitoring drastically reduces water consumption as well as the chemicals required to treat it, and the energy to heat it. About 80% of all demolition material from the old pool was reused or recycled, saving more than 13,000 tonnes of waste going to landfill. During construction, total carbon use was reduced by 56% by the use of timber, including some reclaimed from the old pool, stainless steel pool tanks, and lightweight fabric ceilings. Not only strongly community led, this project has been largely community produced, using 80% local suppliers and contractors and delivered on time and on budget by main contractor Apollo Projects. Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry was present for both the demolition of the old Naenae Pool and the reopening of Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness. He says the closure of the old pool in 2019 was devastating. “With so many who have learnt to swim at the old Naenae Pool, celebrated birthday parties, played water sports, and just enjoyed moments with friends and family, its closure had a big impact,” he says. “There we a real possibility these experiences for people wouldn’t continue after its closure. “Now, with the opening of a bigger and more sustainable facility, those memories and experiences will continue, and be even better for our people.” The redevelopment of Walter Mildenhall Park is now underway since the completion of Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness, with the community supporting spaces for play, BBQs, picnic spots, wheeled activities, gardens, leisure activities, and artistic displays.
