Kiwispan Taranaki - New Plymouth Boys High School COMMUNITY When New Plymouth Boys’ High School needed a custom-made caretakers’ shed that would provide a fit-for-purpose facility for staff, KiwiSpan Taranaki had just the solution. A brand-new, custom-made 8.5m x 12m caretakers’ shed was part of an overall project overseen by New Plymouth-based firm Livingstone Building. A 12m x 12m workshop was also built alongside the shed for extra capacity. KiwiSpan won the tender for the build, and worked with Livingstone to come up with the best solution for the school. “They had all the plans that they needed for a caretaker shed with specs,” KiwiSpan Taranaki owner-operator Joel Schrader says. All the engineering to the outside of the shed was carried out at the KiwiSpan yard before construction began on-site, Joel says. “We built it all onsite – we boxed it and did all the flooring – and then once that was done, the building kits were delivered and we got stuck into construction.” The project had been a straightforward and rewarding one for the team, Joel; says. “It was a nice little project that slotted in between a couple of big projects. It was a pretty simple project – nothing complicated.” The shed was purpose-built for the school and was adapted from a standard KiwiSpan design to fit with what the school needed. “It wasn’t your standard shed. It had a custom-designed cantilevered roof and a cantilevered awning at the front. We went through several different designs for it. This is definitely purpose-built for the caretakers.” It was a tight site to work on, with the extra challenge of working around the school’s operating hours, and being in close proximity to the hockey field. “It was a challenge,” Joel says, “but we navigated our way through it, as you do.” The build took a total of eight weeks, with landscaping work completed by Livingstone. The project was a step outside the company’s main market of lifestyle and commercial builds, Joel says. “That shed was a bit on the smaller side of what we usually do. I think we’ve met the brief and executed it really well. It’s a pretty nice-looking facility.” The company welcomed the opportunity to work alongside the school, and Joel hoped it would lead on to further work in a similar space. “To work for schools and big-name companies was always the goal. That’s what we are striving for – well-known companies or organisations in the community.” KiwiSpan is a national brand of high-quality, customisable steel sheds, with licensees throughout the country. Its kitset options cover everything from lifestyle buildings to commercial and industrial buildings and farm sheds. All plans are customisable and the website includes a 3D shed-builder function where customers can design their own shed. The New Plymouth franchise has 15 staff covering the Taranaki region. Joel bought the existing licence in 2009 when there was only one team member, and has since grown the business substantially. 170 Powderham Street, New Plymouth hello@architectpeople.co.nz QUALITY STEEL SHEDS, DESIGNED FOR YOU Call 0800 870 078 to speak to your local KiwiSpan team for a free no-obligation quote. www.kiwispan.co.nz 06 758 2605 | 027 445 6924 | electric.L@xtra.co.nz | www.electricl.co.nz Withmore than 40 years experience in the electrical contracting industry, we pride ourselves on providing quality and cost-effective workmanship and solutions across all sectors.
