Bidfood Taupō - Naylor Love REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Bidfood Taupō, the newest branch of New Zealand’s leading wholesale food-service supplier, has opened a modern distribution centre to better serve the Central Plateau region. Opened in July 2024, the Taupō branch, located at 11 John Brook Crescent, Wharewaka, serves an area encompassing Taupō, Tūrangi, Taumarunui, Ohakune and Waiouru, previously handled by Bidfood branches in Rotorua and Palmerston North, strengthening Bidfood’s presence and improving service deliveries to central North Island customers. Since it began in 2000, Bidfood New Zealand has grown into a market leader in food-service supplies, with 18 dedicated food service branches nationwide, offering a wide range of products across fresh and frozen foods, chilled ambient products, liquor, and non-food consumables. Bidfood delivers to industries such as the armed forces, healthcare, hospitality, fine dining, and quick-service restaurants. General manager of Bidfood Taupō, Jack Ball, says the new facility is a strategic move to enhance efficiencies and improve customer service. “Prior to us opening, some areas received three deliveries a week,” he says. “Now, we can offer up to six delivery days a week, with options for afternoon runs and customer pick-ups. It’s all about flexibility and reliability.” The branch employs 55 staff, including warehouse workers, drivers, and account managers, some of whom transitioned seamlessly from the Rotorua and Palmerston North teams, but most being locals to the area. “For our customers, it’s business as usual – just better.” Built by main contractor Naylor Love, the 4506sqm facility is equipped with modern amenities, including six administration offices, a boardroom, cold store, chiller, dry store, and fresh produce department. The building features a rainwater reuse system with five above-ground and underground tanks that supply water for use in hose taps, toilets and truck-washing stations. An all-weather canopy connects two buildings to create a seamless drive-through and loading bay for delivery trucks, while automatic gates provide safe and secure entry and exit points. “This facility is designed to operate efficiently in all weather conditions, and can hold up to 1895 pallets, which gives us room for growth,” says Jack. Naylor Love was excellent to collaborate with and project manager Clive Simpson was always on hand to answer any queries or accommodate design adjustments, says Jack. Acknowledgement also went to the pivotal role the local iwi and hapu, Ngāti Tutemohuta, played in ensuring a collaborative and respectful entry into the region for Bidfood Taupo. “Without them and their involvement, we wouldn’t have had the reception we received. They were key in helping us connect with local council and the marae and the local MP. It also helps that my wife comes from the area, and we’re grateful we can contribute to her home town.” Bidfood Taupo emphasised local engagement throughout the project employing local contractors for maintenance and services. “From plumbing to truck refrigeration, we’re committed to supporting the local economy,” Jack says. Bidfood Taupō’s commitment to the local economy extends to sourcing products from nearby farms and butcheries. “We’re buying meat from local suppliers while providing them with packaging and other essentials,” says Jack, “A mutually beneficial relationship that strengthens the regional economy.” The new Taupō branch has improved service reliability, especially during peak tourist seasons. “Summer in Taupō is vibrant, and winter sees high demand from skifields like Ruapehu and Tūroa.” Bidfood Taupō actively engages in sponsorship for local initiatives and sees plenty of potential for further expansion and forging deeper community ties. “Since opening, we’ve seen an uplift in customers, and we’re excited about the opportunities ahead,” Jack says. 09 373 5880 | 09 373 5883 | mail@pswan.co.nz | www.pswan.co.nz PROCESS DESIGN • ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES • STRUCTURAL / CIVIL ENGINEERING • CONSULTATION Peter Swan Limited engineering | architecture | project management Qualified and skilled professional brick and block layers servicing Taupo and the wider North Island Proudly Supporting Bidfood - Taupo +64 27 361 0253 holderandsonsltd@outlook.com www.holderandsons.co.nz REGAL JOINERY 104 High Street, Hamilton 07 847 9882 regal.joinery@xtra.co.nz Aluminium Joinery Commercial REGAL Proud to support Bidfood Taupo businesscentral Each edition priority delivered to your door. .
