| 35 Hawke’s Bay: Ice Electrical REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT New plants ensure safe drinking water The second facility at Eastbourne complements this effort, handling the remaining third of the district’s population. This development includes a water discovery centre, which allows visitors to see the inner workings of the treatment plant. T T Bernadette Cooney “We particularly entered the ECANZ competition because we believe that the workmanship we put into it was above the standards of what you would normally expect for a competitive tender project.” Industrial and commercial electrical solution specialists, ICE Electrical has achieved a significant milestone at the most recent Master Electricians Awards, winning a Bronze in the Project Award Over $5 Million category, for its role in delivering safe drinking water to thousands of Hastings households. This recognition highlights the company’s exceptional work on the Frimley Park and Eastbourne Water Treatment Plants, critical projects spearheaded by Hastings District Council to ensure safe and resilient drinking water supplies for its residents. These facilities were developed in response to the 2016 Havelock North water contamination crisis, which tragically sparked widespread illness and exposed the vulnerabilities of the region’s aquifer-reliant water supply. Following this event, Hastings District Council adopted a new drinking-water strategy, which led to the development of two major water treatment plants in Hastings – one at Frimley Park, and a second known as Waiaroha, at the corner of Southampton St East and Hastings St South. Frimley Park plant was completed after 24 months of intensive work from 2021 to 2023 and now serves approximately two-thirds of Hastings households. The second facility at Eastbourne complements this effort, handling the remaining third of the district’s population. This development includes a water discovery centre, which allows visitors to see the inner workings of the treatment plant. Together, these plants made up a significant share of the Hastings District Council’s $95 million drinking water capital upgrade programme. Implementing cutting-edge water treatment technologies, including UV sterilisation and automated pumping systems, ICE Electrical was a key subcontractor to Drainways, the main contractor overseeing the ambitious two-plant construction. Under the leadership of senior project manager David Frank, ICE Electrical managed the installation of electrical and instrumentation systems essential for the facilities’ operation. An impressive and complex system that draws ground water into eight million-litre storage tanks onsite, ICE Electricals’ scope of works included powering the plant’s operations from the transformer mains cabling through to switchboards, to the plant motor control centre and pump systems that bring raw water up into the plant in preparation for UV sterilisation. The plants feature advanced automation, allowing continuous monitoring and management of water quality, and supply 24/7. This level of sophistication required technical precision that ICE Electrical delivered on. David emphasises ICE Electricals’ commitment to exceeding expectations on the Frimley Park and Eastbourne water treatment plant projects. “We particularly entered the ECANZ competition because we believe that the workmanship we put into it was above the standards of what you would normally expect for a competitive tender project,” says David. “We went the extra mile on a lot of things that others may choose to throttle back on,” he says, “but we prioritised quality over cost-cutting, which results in an installation with enhanced durability and performance.” Drainways Contracting, praised the collaboration with ICE Electrical, saying it was a privilege to work with David and the team on such a significant project. Ice Electrical Ltd continues to contribute to Hawke’s Bay infrastructure improvements, having set up a branch in Hastings, adding to its existing presence in Palmerston North and New Plymouth. 33 Clyde Street, Invercargill 9810 New Zealand PROUDLY SUPPORTING ICE ELECTRICAL LTD PROVIDING INDUSTRIAL SWITCHBOARD & AUTOMATION SOLUTIONS SINCE 1968 03 2144 264 admin@clivewilson.co.nz www.clivewilson.co.nz
