Eligible families can apply annually for a Te Rauā affordable rental grant, allowing them to pay 80% of the market rent. The wider goal is to help whānau in Te Rauā into permanent housing through various pathways to home ownership. With a number of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes underway, Leon expects they will all be completed by mid-2025. The trust is currently speaking to Te Whatu Ora and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development regarding final funding for Tokotoko o Te Rangi. “Te Rauā is more than just homes; it represents hope and a new beginning for our community,” says Leon. “This development will help whānau build stable lives right here in Wairoa, surrounded by their loved ones.” The housing development forms part of TToTW’s broader strategy focusing on homes and employment. The trust is simultaneously developing significant horticultural projects across 100 hectares, with half dedicated to apple orchards and the remainder planned for diverse crops to provide year-round employment opportunities. Through a partnership with Ohuia Corporation, a Māori corporation, the trust is also developing an additional 30 hectares of orchards. The projects are expected to begin yielding fruit by 2027 and are projected to create 60 jobs. Future plans include expansion into post-harvest operations with the Trust currently investigating opportunities.
