42 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Hawke’s Bay: Cheal Napier T T Karen Phelps Services tailored to specific projects Cheal Napier offers a comprehensive suite of services across civil engineering, surveying, geospatial, resource management planning, and project management. “We are proud to be part of a team recognised within the community as having a proven track record of ultrahigh-quality developments, while remaining respectful of the environment.” Despite the current economic slowdown, which has seen reduced activity in both public and private sectors, Cheal Napier is bucking the trend by actively seeking to employ more staff and expand its business. Founded in 1940 by Laurie Cheal as a small surveying practice in Taupō, the company has grown into a multi-disciplinary consultancy with offices in Taupō, Taumarunui, Ohakune, Rotorua, Napier and Hamilton. “Our growth is due to our reputation and repeat clientele, as well as large projects happening in the region,” says Alan Martin-Smith, regional manager of the Cheal Napier office. The company offers a comprehensive suite of services across civil engineering, surveying, geospatial, resource management planning, and project management. Its multidisciplinary approach allows it to provide integrated solutions for clients from infrastructure development to land management and geospatial mapping. One of Cheal’s recent innovations is the establishment of a dedicated geospatial team specialising in laser scanning and UAV surveying. Laser scanning provides fast, efficient data capture for design and modelling in 3D. With this technology they can collect large amounts of data over complex structures in hazardous environments. “While Cheal has embraced this technology for over 10 years now, due to the high demand for large-scale data capture it was decided to establish a specialised geospatial team to focus on this type of work,” Alan explains. “From laser scanning and tracking for sub-millimetre accuracy, to drones, investment in cutting-edge technology is ongoing.” Cheal business manager Chantelle Howes says that a real point of difference is that Cheal prioritises building strong and collaborative relationships with its clients. “We practise active listening, open communication, and understanding our clients’ unique needs,” she says. “Our client-centric approach allows us to tailor our services to specific project requirements and deliver personalised solutions. “We work closely with stakeholders, ensuring that their input is incorporated into our work and that their vision is brought to life.” In order to do this, Cheal has cultivated its own unique culture with core values that underpin everything it does. Its multidisciplinary structure means that it is in a strong position to provide a number of solutions, including planning, surveying and engineering, from one place. “This fosters collaboration and allows us to provide clients with the best expertise across various disciplines. Our highly qualified professionals work together, leveraging their collective capabilities to achieve big-picture thinking and deliver exceptional outcomes,” says Alan. Chantelle says that Cheal has also cultivated a strong community-driven culture, participating in initiatives like the Youth Pathways programme and supporting causes meaningful to its employees. The company has taken particular pride in its sustainable development projects in the Hawke’s Bay region, such as the Mission Hills residential land development project. “We are proud to be part of a team recognised within the community as having a proven track record of ultra-high-quality developments, while remaining respectful of the environment,” says Alan. Over the past 12 years, Cheal Napier has grown from a small team to 14 staff members. Despite the challenging economic environment, the company remains optimistic about the next six to 12 months as the market recovers. “Our goal is to continue to grow and support our local workforce and the region and be recognised as a leader in our field,” says Alan. “With decades of experience and a vast portfolio of successful projects, we are deeply committed to making a positive impact on the future of Aotearoa, New Zealand.” 021 221 1241 mike@mwmanagement.co.nz Proudly Supporting Cheal Consultants Ltd • Commercial • Residential • Educational • Design & Build
