48 | Hawke’s Bay: Pro Arbore T T Kelly Deeks Getting to grips with cyclone debris With its new high-performance Arjes Recycler, Pro Arbore can now deal with debris that’s not conventionally clean. “With our new shredder, we can turn that material into landscaping supplies and even temporary roading. With its high silt content and chunky wood debris it’s such a dense product.” Hawke’s Bay tree maintenance company Pro Arbore has reinvented itself since Cyclone Gabrielle hit the region in 2023, giving the company the justification it needed to expand its capabilities with substantial investment in specialised machinery designed to handle the dirty, silty, gnarly debris created by this extreme weather event. Pro Arbore offers specialist commercial and domestic tree-care services from tree pruning to tree removal, as well as the full range of firewood, landscaping supplies, and other milled timber products made out of recycled tree debris and waste. From its base in Havelock North, Pro Arbore has taken a major role in Cyclone Gabrielle clean-up, including working for the Silt Recovery Taskforce, which was ongoing up until December, having returned about 7000ha of productive land with the removal of cyclone-strewn sediment and debris. “We had to reinvent our company,” says Pro Arbore managing director Bart Mulder. “The materials we process are normally very tidy and clean, but the materials this cyclone created were covered with silt, and it’s really hard on the equipment. “It’s like putting sandpaper through your machinery and we found very quickly that it wasn’t going to work. “We had to reinvent the way we process materials, so we bought a new shredder that can handle that type of material, and it’s created a new market for us.” With its new high-performance Arjes Recycler, Pro Arbore can now deal with debris that’s not conventionally clean. The machine can process large volumes of material, including large trees and contaminated slash from Cyclone Gabrielle, in a short amount of time, reducing costs and improving productivity. “If anyone has a site that has debris kicking around for years and years, it’s a very expensive operation to cart it away. “With our new shredder, we can turn that material into landscaping supplies and even temporary roading. With its high silt content and chunky wood debris it’s such a dense product.” The new Arjes Recycler is just one of the latest innovations in Pro Arbore’s drive to create solutions and solve problems. Bart is proud to be running the widest range of gear of any local company, and this latest acquisition, along with its range of large tracked chippers, gives Pro Arbore a real stronghold in the region, where its capabilities have been proven for some time as a council and government agency preferred contractor. Bart learnt his trade at Otago Polytechnic back in the day when New Zealand’s arboricultural industry was young and unfledged. He augmented his education with a working OE in Europe, where tree care was more progressive and looked quite different from what we do in New Zealand. “Extreme cold in Holland and Sweden means trees don’t grow very quickly over there, so where in New Zealand we’d be happy to remove an unsuitable tree and replace it with something more appropriate, over there they’re more about looking after what they’ve got.” Working on a very old tree in Sweden, Bart had it picked for about 100 years old before he found out it was actually closer to 400 years old. Setting up Pro Arbore on his return, Bart has ever since been ‘for the trees’, applying specialist tree-care knowledge and sustainable environmental practices to keep Hawke’s Bay trees happy, safe, and enjoyable for all.
