| 75 MANUFACTURING Metalform Using their world-class precision machinery they work with their clients to successfully take a concept through design and prototype to a finished product ready for the marketplace. Brent Curnow started his company Tiger Steel 12 years ago in direct response to customer demand. When he was 26, having worked in the steel industry for eight years, he was taking a break to travel in the United States and found himself ielding calls from customers wanting him to import their steel requirements. He came back and set up Tiger Steel, using a deceptively simple formula which is still unique to him in New Zealand, and he’s gone from strength to strength ever since. “I ill orders only according to customer requirements via indent, consignment or stocked o site 3PL, which keeps my overheads very low. I provide the critical link between the overseas steel mills and delivery of steel to store/site in New Zealand” says Brent. Tiger Steel’s customers are generally either the largest or themost innovative in their ield, or, as in the case of leading contract manufacturer Metalform, they’re both. All of Brent’s clients, whether they’re stainless-steel manufacturers of dairy or food equipment, or the bridge builders currently holding the record for the biggest single shipment of steel Tiger Steel has brought in to date: a 1700metric ton shipment of steel plate for theManawatu Bridge Project, know that Brent has the expertise they need to get themwhat they require. Every March/April Brent does his due diligence, touring the various overseas companies supplying the steel to keep an eye on quality. He has personally Meeting demand for quality steel visited every steel mill that Tiger Steel has supplied through and about 20% of them drop o his list of suppliers after he’s visited them. “The steel mills who are exporting to Europe and the US are the ones who I visit because they have the quality we need here. We have the highest requirements for steel anywhere in the world, generally high tensile with thick coatings that comes with warranties of durability, because New Zealand is two volcanic islands with coastlines and a high seasalt environment never far away, plus geothermal, which means we have high corrosion rates,” he explains. With an eye on the future Brent keeps his focus on new products being developed overseas that he can bring into New Zealand to enable local manufacturers to become more competitive world-wide. “For 10 years our Galpha product has addedmagnesium into their coatings of galvanised steel which greatly improves corrosion resistance. Environmentalists love it because we can then lower the amount of zinc that has to be used,” says Brent. Tiger Steel is always looking for innovation from its steel suppliers, knowing that it can be passed onto its clients to assist them in taking their own innovations to the world stage, bringing durable, high quality steel into New Zealand, to order, with prices that re lect its low overheads. 021 844 607 brentc@tigersteel.co.nz www.tigersteel.co.nz We specialise in importing various types of steel products that are not usually able to be manufactured by New Zealand based steel mills.
