Team dh is one of the largest painting and decorating firms in the Manawatū, with a diverse workforce of more than 50. Company owner and founder David Hurn likes things done properly, and he sets a high standard for his staff. “We’ve only got one standard, and that is very high,” he says. “We pride ourselves on our quality workmanship.” To bring more quality to the entire decorating process, team dh has started up its own Gib stopping division with a team of four. Recent projects have benefitted from the smoother and tighter timeframes team dh can achieve by providing Gib stopping from in-house, and also the control of quality the company can exert to ensure their painters can come in to work on a smooth and sharply finished surface. “We’ve completed some amazing projects recently,” David says. “One of the biggest we’ve ever worked on is the big Te Whare Toroa contract at Ōhakea Air Force base, where two new hangars are currently under construction. At 180m long, 80m wide, and 26m high, this was the biggest piece of infrastructure that the New Zealand Defence Force has.” Team dh also played its part in the development of the new location for Manukura special character school at Massey University, providing their trademark sharp, neat, and professional finish, so crucial for this school, which is dedicated to excellence. In support of the local community, team dh was one of more than 180 local individuals, businesses, clubs, and charitable trusts who supported the new Children’s ED project at Palmerston North Hospital. Providing the painting and decorating service, team dh elevated the new space with peaceful and interesting child-friendly décor. David says it takes good planning for a painting and decorating company to make it through a downturn in the construction industry. He says he always looks for work well in advance of when it’s going to start, and his daughter, and team dh up-and-comer Rebecca de Malmanche, says he is very good at building relationships. “He’s got all of these contacts around town and he plans our work well in advance so we’ve got that security for all of our staff,” she says. “We are very fortunate on that front, and I hope I can continue in the same way.” David is supporting Rebecca to eventually take over team dh. “I still need him to hold my hand,” she says. “I don’t have a background in construction, mine is in business management so I’m getting on alright with the administration, but I know I’m going to find it really important to have good, experienced people around me.” The team dh team is a sure thing, having been built from the ground up with high standards as a target. David and Rebecca keep very engaged with their workforce with lines of communication open and each party’s needs catered for by the other. It’s a family environment, with Rebecca’s office currently doubling as a nursery for her six-month-old baby, and her three-year-old becoming quite adept at toolbox meetings.
