JOINERY Burley Kitchens and Cabinetry Napier’s Burley Kitchens & Cabinetry has proven that a project doesn’t need to be grand in scale to make a lasting impression. The company’s stunning renovation of a compact kitchen earned it the 2024 Master Joiner Excellence Award – Best in Region (Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay), continuing their success from last year’s win in the same category. The project involved updating the original kitchen of a 1940s’ character home. The result is a contemporary, functional space that complements the charm of the rest of the house. Bright white cabinetry and stainless steel bench tops create a fresh, crisp look, while warmth is added through solid timber door frames, new timber shelving on opposite walls, and the original timber floor, lovingly patched and polished by the homeowner. Burley Kitchens & Cabinetry owner Craig Burley highlights the kitchen’s clever design, which maximises usable space, despite its modest size. A standout feature is the pantry, which spans the entire back wall. “It’s not your typical pantry,” Craig explains. “It provides storage for dry goods and small appliances, with three sets of three drawers at the bottom and a three-door slider with a stainless steel bench top on top.” Creating this unique solution required innovation. “Most mechanisms cater to two or four doors, so we had to find a way to make it both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Thanks to our skilled stainless steel fabricator, Metalworks, we incorporated grooves into the pantry bench top to accommodate the track system.” Another challenge was optimising corner storage in the compact space. The team used a Moving Corner pull-out unit, which brings corner shelving into full view when the door is opened, maximising accessibility. This isn’t the first accolade for Burley Kitchens & Cabinetry and its previous incarnation, Garry Nugent Joinery. Their track record includes the 2023 Best in Region Master Joiner Excellence Award, won for another outstanding kitchen project. Craig brings a meticulous attention to detail to every project, honed from his background in fine furnishings. After working at the family business for over 20 years, he took ownership 11 years ago. The company, established in 1983 by his father-in-law, Garry Nugent, continues to prioritise customer service and quality craftsmanship. Looking ahead, Burley Kitchens is embracing technological advancements to enhance efficiency, and the team is implementing new software to modernise its operations. “With machinery now handling the bulk of the work, we’re also adopting user-friendly software to streamline job management and design,” says Craig. “We still rely on a fair amount of paperwork, so this will help to reduce that and improve efficiency across the board. It’s been a learning curve, and we’re excited to go live with the program early next year.” From award-winning designs to innovative business practices, Burley Kitchens & Cabinetry is setting a high standard for the joinery industry in Hawke’s Bay and beyond.
