DEVELOPMENT Peacock Glades T T Karen Phelps “We’ve preserved the integrity of the site as much as possible, which was visited by hundreds of thousands of local and overseas tourists in its 20-plus years of operation as Owlcatraz, so it’s a very special development.” Peacock Glades is a new boutique subdivision in Shannon that developer Geoff Kenny says promises a rare combination of serenity, history and natural beauty. Developed by GBK Developments Ltd, it is the latest project from experienced developers Geoff and business partner Rolland Lamb, who have a reputation for thoughtful, high-quality residential projects. When the pair acquired the well-known Owlcatraz tourist attraction property in 2021 they were determined to maintain its character, while creating residential lots. “Subdividing it into normal-size residential sections would have meant losing the original appeal of the property, but with larger lots buyers will get a unique piece of history,” explains Geoff. “We’ve preserved the integrity of the site as much as possible, which was visited by hundreds of thousands of local and overseas tourists in its 20-plus years of operation as Owlcatraz, so it’s a very special development.” Peacock Glades sits behind a private entranceway, offering residents the tranquillity and convenience of being a five-minute walk to the small village of Shannon while remaining close to key centres, including Levin (a 15-minute drive), Palmerston North (30-minute drive) and only an hour from Wellington once the new highway is extended. For commuters, the railway station is just a 10-minute walk away, making travel convenient, while the rural feel is maintained. Peacock Glades’ 11 lots range from 3400 to 14,400sqm, each offering a sense of space and privacy. Many blocks include native bush, while the largest lot boasts its own creek and pond. The development supports a variety of wildlife from eels to ducks. Six peacocks, which give the development its name, roam freely across the property. Residents can also enjoy the bird aviary, pathways through bush, and the general sense of connection with nature. Lot 1, the original information centre, has been sold, and the new owner has nearly completed renovations to turn it into a unique family home surrounded by native bush. Another distinctive section is the Pond Block, a 3.5-acre lot surrounded by trees and bush complete with its own creek and pond. All lots are connected to the local town sewerage system and have power. GBK Developments has a track record of delivering distinctive residential projects. Formed in 2018, the company successfully completed the 40-section development, The Avenue in Masterton, with its larger than normal-sized sections and quality landscaping proving popular, and it was fully sold out long before titles were issued. Geoff acknowledges the difficulties of creating such a development in today’s regulatory and market environment: “Getting subdivision consent for Peacock Glades was a challenging and expensive process, and it took us over two years to achieve,” he says. “Despite the hurdles, the result is a carefully designed community that balances lifestyle, heritage and environmental preservation.” He says since the sections have been released to the market, interest has been strong from building companies as well as individuals.
