Palmerston North architectural designer, Brendan Johnstone, is reshaping highend, full-service luxury home design and delivery with his boutique practice, Vector Architecture. Known for its creativity, precision, and client-first philosophy, the firm combines cutting-edge design with meticulous project management to ensure every home is not only beautiful, but the result of a stress-free and rewarding journey for the client. Brendan established Vector Architecture in 2020 and harnesses 17 years of industry experience, including a lead design role with a major property developer. While his work for them specialised in commercial, he says his passion always lay in luxury residential design. “I’d been designing large-scale commercial buildings for years,” he says. “But I realised I wanted to work more closely again with people and help them create unique, personal spaces that they’ll live in every day. High-end residential architecture allows that deeper connection and collaboration.” Launching a new business at the height of Covid-19 was bold, but Brendan says timing and relationships worked in his favour. The developer he had been working for had just embarked on a new high-end residential subdivision in Palmerston North, giving him an immediate pipeline of work and the opportunity to make his mark. His first project, a standout architectural home overlooking the lagoon, was unlike anything else in the region. Its timeless design, blue stone detailing, and minimalist forms set a new benchmark for local architecture and quickly attracted attention. “It’s vernacular you’d more expect to see in Queenstown, and that definitely helped establish Vector Architecture’s name.” Since then, the practice has focused predominantly on luxury, high-performance homes – projects that demand precision, creativity, and meticulous attention to detail. Brendan says his background in large-scale development strengthened his understanding of how to balance aesthetics, energy efficiency and investment, and these skills help inform every residential project. He says Vector Architecture continually embraces innovation as energy-efficiency standards evolve. “We’re constantly learning, testing new materials and systems, and applying that knowledge for better performance and comfort. Every project is an opportunity to refine and push what’s possible.” The company’s approach is holistic. Brendan not only handles architectural design, but also interior design, cabinetry composition, lighting and plumbing selections, and full contract administration. “Many practices hand over after the consent stage, leaving clients to navigate the build and financials on their own,” he says. “But that’s where things get complex – especially in the high-end market. “We stay with the client right through to completion, managing every detail so the process remains smooth and cohesive, and the end result consistent.” That comprehensive involvement also extends to the builder relationship. Brendan maintains close communication throughout construction, ensuring design intent and quality are upheld. “Designers and builders think differently,” he says. “Because we’ve lived and breathed the project for months, sometimes years, we have insight into the implications of every on-site decision. “Embracing a team approach avoids costly or compromising changes.” At its core, Vector Architecture is built on collaboration, integrity, and long-term relationships. Brendan’s personable, handson approach ensures clients feel supported throughout the process – often resulting in friendships that last well beyond the final handover. “I love that part of the job,” he says. “These aren’t quick, cookie-cutter builds – they’re deeply personal projects that rely on trust and creativity to shape homes that truly stand apart and enrich the human experience.” CONSTRUCTION N C info@ncconstruction.org.nz 027 261 7032 New homes - Decks - Fences - Renovations
