We hold ourselves to the highest possible standards.” BUILDING Petersen and Barnes Building Company T Kelly Deeks The award-winning cedar-clad home offers the perfect blend of style and functionality. T aranaki construction firm Petersen and Barnes Building Company has scooped a veritable trove of awards at the 2020 Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards, with a home built for ex-pats who are working abroad, and wanted to live and celebrate the Kiwi ideal on their return visits home. Petersen and Barnes brought home the National Category award, a Top 100 award, the Regional Supreme award, the Regional Craftsmanship award, the Regional Category award, a Gold award, the Sustainable Excel- lence Lifestyle award, and the Outdoor Living Excellence Lifestyle award. Sam Petersen and Mal Barnes will be chasing the only remaining awards, Kitchen Excellence and Bathroom Excellence, with their next entry in 2022. “We specialise in custom, contemporary builds that demand perfection,” Mal says. “We hold ourselves to the highest possible standards.” Those standards certainly impressed the judging panel at the 2020 Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards. Petersen and Barnes’ entry is a contemporary, sustain- able home, offering the perfect blend of style and functionality. One of Taranaki’s most efficient homes, it includes a state of the art insulated floor slab, and almost double the industry standard for insulation. Oriented to the sun, the home works passively to regulate its interior temper- ature throughout the year, without relying on electricity. Located in the beachside suburb of Stran- don, the cedar home emanates relaxed vibes and a beachy feel. Set across two storeys, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two living areas, the home feels larger than its 180sqm thanks to high raking roof lines and matching internal ceiling heights. The use of natural materials, including grooved plywood linings and birch plywood ceilings, makes the look light, fresh, and healthy. Natural finishes have also been a focus for this build such as a plant-based wax floor seal- ant and water-based paints and stains. Externally, dark horizontal weatherboards wrap the ground floor, then bright vertical cedar rises up to clad the two-storeyed gable. Petersen and Barnes have been established and trusted names in Taranaki’s construction industry since 1982. Murray Petersen and Neil Barnes ran their business until 1998, then 20 years later it was resurrected by Murray and Neil’s sons Sam and Mal, who were approached by a friend who was looking for trusted builders to take on a cutting edge, technical new build. Proud to remain a family business, Petersen and Barnes Building Company continues to deliver the same professional service and at- tention to detail the names have always been known for. Mal says this project is where he and Sam’s passion lies, in building bespoke, architectural homes. “We want to be building homes that chal- lenge us, and this definitely did that for us,” he says. We’re really proud of the product we’ve produced,” says Mal. “Tto get the awards is amazing. “It makes all of those late nights really worth it, because we did do a lot of late nights, espe- cially on the birch ply ceilings.” Custom Architectural Metal Work Proudly Fabricated and Installed by Spark Metal Fabrication Also specialising in: Structural Steel Seismic Strengthening Custom Metal Work / Sheet Metal
