| 11 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport The 17ha site will eventually include a 1000 square metre gym, an altitude studio, cryotherapy facilities, recovery pools, four outdoor fields and a 70m by 50m indoor field. Halverson Civil Ltd (HCL) are a Wellington-based ground engineering irm that constructs deep piled foundations throughout New Zealand. HCL specialise in a collaborative design and construct approach where we can utilise our in-house design and expertise to provide better value to our clients. HCL was approached by Holmes Construction Group (who we’ve worked with over the past 10 years), for the installation of foundations for the new NZCIS Green room facility. This is an extremely unique project as the building will house an indoor arena, approx. 70m*50m with an arti icial turf, making a traditional concrete slab not feasible. Without the concrete slab to support the structure, the buildings loads were taken up on each of the portal frames. To compli- cate this, the local Hutt Valley geology is an old riverbed featuring di icult to drill ground conditions, where piling is both expensive and risky. As a result, the building required deep founda- tions to be drilled into geological formations that posed construction challenges. HCL prepared a method- ology for a reduced risk approach to piling on this site. HCL collaborated with the Holmes Construction Group and the client’s team of consultants to develop a system for controlling both the wind and seismic loads from the unique structure. We achieved this by utilising our previous experience to Going deep with Halverson Civil develop a strategy where there is continuous improvement of the design concept during pre-construc- tion, allowing savings to be recog- nised during the delivery phase. Once the general form of new design was drafted, HCL carried out a pre-production test pile, one of our unique services. Our previous test data on surrounding sites in the Hutt Valley area suggested that the piles may have a far greater capacity than originally estimated during design. This test also ensured the deep gravel layers would be suitable for founding the new structure. During the construction phase, there were no additional cost increas- es due to unforeseen construction issues. HCL’s design improvement resulted in a reduction in the total volume from 248m 3 to 123m 3 . Through working more closely with the contractors and designers we were able to deliver an enhanced design that limited the risk to the client. By engaging a suitable contrac- tor early in the design process, greater project efficiencies can be gained. This is due to the contractor having an invested interest to put forward their best concepts and ideas enabling the input good builders and developers to mitigate risk.
