REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT PGL Group/APL Window Solutions Born with the aim of giving back to the community, Cambridge based Camex Civil Ltd has steadily grown from humble beginnings in 1998 as a rural contractor to an experienced and diverse operation servicing the Greater Waikato. Founded by local farmer Jon Brewer to supplement income earned o the family farm, Camex Civil’s major break occurred in response to adversity. When the Global Financial Crisis hit in 2008, coupled with a drought in the Waikato, traditional streams of rural contracting dried up and Camex Civil quickly found itself looking for work. Jon, a quali ied drainlayer, along with eldest son Jason who had completed a drainlaying course at Polytech while at school, successfully responded to a drainlaying contract and Camex Civil has never looked back. Now employing a permanent team of 130, along with 30 subcontractors on a daily basis, Camex Civil is comprised of ive key divisions including a Rural division and a civil site works division focused on commercial contractor works for building pads, drains and carparks. A separate division looks after Camex Civil – leading the way Council infrastructure and three-waters projects, another division looks after maintenance of council asset’s, while the ifth division looks after land subdivision projects, averaging 4 500 sections a year. A family operation with Jason now at the helm as CEO, and other siblings in key roles, Jon still maintains close involvement in the more technically challenging projects. Based in Hautapu with another depot in Taupo, Camex Civil’s wide reach of operation extends from Tauranga across to Raglan and from Auckland to Taupo. Re lecting on Camex Civil’s success over the years, Jason has no doubt that it is about the people. “We have an awesome team of people and clients who value our happy team culture, which comes down to people feeling valued for the work they do no matter what their role in the business is. A lot of our work is repeat business through negotiated contracts. That repeat business is about execution of delivery and programme— management always taking responsibility for the work we do. We also strive to be the employer of choice in the region.”
